Wine issues: annotation

Post by chuzzlewit »

Hi,

I'm a Linux user and I've been using PDF-XChange Viewer now for couple of years. For the most part it has worked really well when running under Wine, but I've run into some problems lately.

I know that PDF-XChange Viewer tends to run better under 32-bit Wine, and although I had been successfully running it under 64-bit Wine for some time I begun to notice some strange behaviour from time to time: crashing when I annotate PDFs and then attempted to save; searching the PDF crashed the viewer etc. So, I reinstalled running under 32-bit Wine and everything seems to run perfectly once more.

Except....

I use PDF-XChange Viewer to annotate PDFs a lot for research purposes and tend to use it alongside other software such as Zotero (https://www.zotero.org/) and Docear (www.docear.org/). Initially all of the annotations I made with PDF-XChange Viewer (highlighting/comments etc) would import nicely into these other software. However, I've noticed that since switching to 32-bit Wine my annotations no longer import into these other pieces of software - although they physically appear in the PDF and are saved within the PDF.

Should there be a difference in the way PDF-XChange Viewer stores annotations when running under 32-bit Wine as opposed to 64-bit?

My system is set-up is as follows:
Ubuntu 14.04 (64-bit)
PDF-XChange Viewer version 2.5 (Build 311.0)
current Wine Version 1.7.33 (32-bit)

n.b. PDF-XChange Viewer version 2.5 (Build 311.0) running on Wine version 1.6.2 (64-bit) does not produce this behaviour.

I've already looked at the Wine forum for PDF-XChange Viewer but can't see that anyone else reports this behaviour.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi chuzzlewit,

Thanks for the post - firstly, please be aware that we do not officially support the use of our software on anything but Windows, though we do endeavour to what we can, where we can.

Also, please do note that 1.7.33 is not the latest stable release of Wine and, as such, given that this works on the latest stable release of Wine (1.6.2) cannot really do anything to help. The only suggestion that I can make would be to scale back to the stable release.

Cheers,

Hi Will,

Thanks for taking the time to get back to me - I realise you don't normally support anything not running on Windows. I get the same behaviour when using the latest stable build of Wine 1.62 (32-bit and 64-bit versions).

I've managed to recreate this behaviour in Windows too though. I have a VM running 32-bit version of Windows XP. I installed the latest version of PDFX (version 2.5 (Build 311.0)) and same thing happens. I can mark up and save my PDF and re-open the PDF with annotations, but my other software won't import the annotations.

Anyway, I'm going to dig around a little more on the Wine forums and see what I can find.

Thanks anyway

Hi Martyn,

What application are you attempting to import the annotations with? Is it ours, or a 3rd party app? If the latter, this maybe due to the fact that they don't use the same file format to store annotations, or due to the fact that they aren't handling the file properly.

Could you try importing the annotations with another application and see if that works? Also, could you try exporting comments from the other app and seeing what file format they are stored in?

Cheers,
