I am having trouble inserting PDFs into Excel as PDF Exchange viewer files. Once upon a time, when going in Excel into Insert > Object, I coould insert PDF files into Excel like this:
But now, when I follow the same steps, it only gets imported like this:
I can't think of anything that has changed. I had PDF Exchange and Adobe Acrobat installed previously (when it worked) and can't uninstall Acrobat, as I need both for work. Off the top of my head, I have tried this:
Set PDF Exchange as default in Control Panel > Default Programs
Tried to set PDF Exchange as default PDF hanbdler in Adobe Acrobat (It is not listed there as an option)
Thanks for the post - this icon is determined by the application that is set as your default PDF handler, in Windows. If you would like for this to be the Viewer, please right click any PDF in Windows Explorer, then hit Open With --> Choose Default --> PDF-XChange Viewer.
HTH!
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Thank you for your reply. That did not unfortunately work. I had already set PDF Exchange viewer as default PDF handler via Control Panel > Default Programs. But I also tried it the way you described it for good measure.
In the above image, you will see that PDF Exchange has been set as the default PDF handler by the highlighted file 'verena.pdf' and the Open button, both of which have helpfully had their icons switched to the PDF Exchange icon. To the left, you will see a portion of an Excel sheet that has had two PDF documents imported via Insert > Object > Create from File. Display as icon is ticked as well. I'm using Excel 2010, 32-bit version. Imported after changing the file association as per your suggestion.
If you have any other suggestion, I would be very grateful

The way MS Office products embed other files inside is very specific. They use something called OLE Objects - and for PDF files then most likely use Adobe's such object. Once this object is used, then the recipient of the file must have the same software at their end to be able to open the file - and not just any PDF Viewer.
So I would recommend you to instead convert the original document to PDF, and then add the attachments. The attachments to a PDF file can then be opened with the default application for handling this file type on the recipient machine.
