Unintentionally selecting annotations when hovering

I've used this product on and off for almost over a year now and I love it! There is one issue that is currently bugging me, though; whenever I use a tool (especially the pencil tool) I can scribble on the PDF as expected. However, if my cursor is on a preexisting scribble it becomes selected instead of starting a new scribble. Is there a way to turn this function off? I'm using a stylus and the issue is not very conducive to making quick scribbles.

Thanks for the post - you will need to turn Exclusive Mode on, which can be done by first making sure that the Properties Toolbar is enabled, then selecting this icon:

Once enabled, you will need to hold down Shift, to select annotations.
