Callouts

Post by Robert L »

This program has many useful features but there is one item that, to me, is annoying. I must use the callout function frequently and I usually ‘stack’ the callouts along the sides of the sheet. Because of this, the leader must be attached to the sides of the callout box. However, as I move the arrow the leader jumps to either the top or side of the box and I must reposition it each time. Is there a way to lock the position of the leader as it is attached to the box?

Hello Robert L,

Welcome to our forums.
Yes you can change that - just position the main callout text box to where you want it and then you should be able to click on the small circle that is touching that text box and drag it around with the mouse to the desired side of the box.

Thank you, but is there a way to lock the position of the leader?

What I do is first format a callout box (Size, alignment, etc.) and copy and paste as many as I need. I then move the boxes into position and move the arrows to point to the items on the document. As I do this, the leader jumps from the side to the top or bottom and I have to reposition it each time.

Hi Robert,

I don't believe that there is any way to lock that, but the jumping shouldn't be happening - this was a known issue in an older build, so I would recommend installing the latest Version/build and you shouldn't see this any more.

If you are a licensed user, please see this KB article before downloading and installing the latest Version from below:

Download:

Hope that helps!

Good afternoon. I am also experiencing this problem. I am running version 5.5.311.0 which I believe is the latest build.

Here are the steps to recreate the problem:
1) Created a callout, the program automatically put the leader on the left side.
2) Moved the leader to the top of the box.
3) Edited the text in the callout.

As soon as I edited the text, the leader jumped back to the left side.

How do I prevent this from happening?

Thanks!

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the post - could you please provide a sample document that displays this issue, as I'm not able to reproduce this.

Cheers,

It appears to happen with any PDF for me. Here is one I just created using File - New.

No reply needed but wanted to add that Paul is not alone in wanting this fixed. I will be anxiously awaiting the release that keeps my arrows anchored to the location I chose instead of jumping around as I move the callout box.

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the post - I'm afraid that there hasn't been any update given to us, yet. Our primary focus, currently, is migrating the last of the missing Viewer features, to the Editor (as well as the normal bug fixes).

Just wanted to let you know, the issue still exists in the latest build. 5.5.312.1

Is it still on the to-do list?

Thanks

Hi Paul,

I've confirmed that the problem still exists and have requested that a higher priority be assigned to the problem.

For now, for me at least, I seem to be able to reproduce the problem only with the following steps:
  • 1) Place the callout, then deselect it.
    2) Move the arrow leader to a different side, then deselect it again.
    3) Double left click the callout to edit the text-box.
If, during step 2, I don't deselect the callout, the issue doesn't occur.

Thanks for your continued patience Paul and sincere apologies for the delay!

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the post - I'm not seeing this issue here. Can you please double check that the application updated correctly under Help --> About.

If so, can you please provide more information? Is this specific to one document/one set of documents, or does this happen on all documents?

Also, please provide step-by-step, specific instructions to reproduce the issue and spare no details, even the most minor and trivial of details could be key.

Thanks,

It only happens when:
- the line width is 2 points or more, AND
- the end arrow is more to the left than the left border of the connected textbox.

If the end arrow is more to the right than the right border of the textbox than this phenomenon does NOT happen.

If the line width is only 1 point than it is not possible to reproduce the problem.

Hi Willy,

Thanks for the sample file. I could certainly see the difference between the callout with the thin and with the thick border. I've updated the ticket (#2854) and included your new findings there.

WIll,

Yes, I have confirmed that the application updated correctly.
It has happened to me in all documents.
My initial step-by-step instructions posted a year ago still apply.

Interesting that Willy found no problem with a small width leader. I haven't tried that before. I have confirmed that, indeed, it does not occur for me with a small width leader.

Thanks for continuing to look in to this. I am hopeful for a resolution soon.

There is command named "Auto Adjust Arm Position" that triggers if the Callout tool should auto adjust callout out not.
This command has no default shortcut, but it can be easily added via View -> Toolbars -> Customize Toolbars, find the command in the list (see screenshot):

Image

and add desired shortcut to it.

Now, using that shortcut, you can toggle the tool's logic.

Wow... That's buried deep.

Also, it did not work for me. I experience the same issue no matter how many times I use the shortcut I created to toggle it on/off (assuming it's working, the program gives no feedback that it is toggling on or off).

Any other ideas?

While talking about Callouts -- would it be possible to save not only callout formatting (fill and border colors, text formatting) but also callout size when right-clicking on a sample callout and choosing "Make Current Properties Default"?
Image

The reason for this is, I find that most of the time, the standard callout is too wide, for my purposes.

So I keep finding myself resizing almost every callout I make (and I make lots).

Btw., the same goes with comment boxes for comment text inside highlights -- these are also too wide most of the time, for my purpose:

Thanks for consideration!
