PDF-XChange hanging and permanently 'Spooling'

Post by parsons »

Hello,

I have an annoying issue which I hope someone may be able to assist with, apologies if this has already been raised/resolved but I couldn't locate a previous identical post when searching the forum.

I am unable to print to PDF X3 from any applications (provided the file size is quite large). If I print from any program and just use say 1 clipart image or a few lines of text on Excel, Word, Notepad etc, everything's fine. If, on the other hand I try to print numerous clipart images from Word, it will hang on 'Spooling' (see attachment).

Whenever I print a more complex document (such as a drawing from AutoCAD), the plot job progress bar completes, as does the printing progress bar, but the latter just remains on the screen stating 'Spooling'. The job appears in the print queue of the Printer, but still states that the job is spooling. Simple drawings or text from Notepad print without a problem.

Troubleshooting attempted;

* Tried Printing from MS Word (numerous clipart images), this produced the same issue, in that it appeared to hang and state that it is spooling.

* Cleared everything in the print queue and sent again.

* I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling PDF X3 which had no effect, have also tried with PDF X4. It just sits on spooling.

Any help/advice mpst appreciated.

Thanks,

Ged

Hello Ged,

Looking at your shots - it seems like you are using Vista or Win7 - both operating systems were released well after ver3, and as such it was not designed to support, and we can not guarantee it will work flawlessly on these platforms. We have also discontinued support for ver3 so no new builds or releases would ever be produced - and any bug or outstanding issues that are present in ver3 will not be fixed so I would recommend you to consider an upgrade to ver4 of our the printing drivers:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/downloads
(this will also entitle you for an upgrade to ver5 later this year).

After an upgrade also make sure that your AntiVirus, or MS Office settings are not interfering or e.g. blocking our plug-in - try to temporarily disable your AV, or include our printing drivers in the list of exceptions, and also check the settings in MS Office and ensure that the plug-in is not deactivated in any way.

Best,
Stefan

This file (Map20150909.pdf) also hangs when I am using version 314 and 315.

Steps to reproduce (See ScreenShots_map20150909.zip)
1. Open file
2. Select Print/ Print Preview (Step2.png)
==> The Preview Windows displays the document properly
3. Click on Print
3.1. If Print As Image is selected (Step3_1.png)
=> the preview window shows "No Page Selected" and PDF viewer hangs
3.2.1 If the Print As Image is NOT selected (Step3_2_1.png)
=> Spooling hangs at 26%.
3.2.2. Wait 5 mintues and click cancel, the click button is disable, but stuck (Step3_2_2.png)
==> Only way to recover is to kill PDF process from Task Manager

Prints fine using Adobe DC (adobe_dc.png)

Hi qware,

If you haven't done so already, please download and try the Editor - the Viewer has been replaced by the Editor and so very few, if any, further changes will be made in the future:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFXVE5.zip

The Editor's printing engine has been entirely re-written and, generally, is far better than the Viewer's.

Thanks,

Hi Will,

The editor was able to print the file without hanging.

Does the "PDF-XChange Viewer Simple DLL SDK" use the spooler/printing engine from Viewer or Editor?

Thanks

Hi qware,

The Viewer Simple DLL SDK should only be able to "render" the contents and you then handle printing that content.
The Viewer AX uses the printing engine of the end user Viewer, and the Editor SDK uses the same printing engine as the end user Editor.

I am confused

If the printing engine is my my side, why did Will say
"he Editor's printing engine has been entirely re-written and, generally, is far better than the Viewer's."

If what Stefan say is right,
"The Viewer AX uses the printing engine of the end user Viewer, and the Editor SDK uses the same printing engine as the end user Editor."
This file crashes using viewer but does not using the editor, it means I have two different printing engine.
How do I find out my viewer engine and editor printing engine?

Then how does Adobe find out which driver to use?

Hi qware,
How do I find out my viewer engine and editor printing engine?
I'm not sure that I understand the question - Stefan stated that the Editor and Editor SDK use the same engine, which is a completely different engine than the engine used by both the Viewer and Viewer SDK's. What Stefan said is completely correct and does not, at all, differ from what I said, except to expand upon it.

I'm not quite sure how Adobe enters into the equation here, but I'm sure that it uses its own printing engine that is different from both the Viewer and the Editor. We cannot advise on how it works, because we are not Adobe and therefore do not have access to their source code.

Hopefully that clears up any confusion.

Hi, i wasn't sure if I should reply to this thread or create a new one:

We are running PDF-XChange 2012 (5.5.315.0) and are experiencing hanging during the "Spooling" process as well. We print from an Oracle I/PM 7.7 PR4 thick client. Can someone give us guidance as to what to look for (event logs, debug logs) in order to figure out where the hang is occuring and why?

Thanks very much.

Hi Pasha,

Thank you for the reply. I see that you have sent us an email as well. Could you please send us the temporary files when printing to PDF? Instructions on how to do so can be found here: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowled ... e-an-issue

Thank you!
