Solved: "Fit width" does not really fit window's width
PDF-XChange Editor (Free 5.5.316) on Windows 8.1 x64 does not fit the pdf document to the width of the window. It seems like the document is a little bit bigger than the window's width, so there is always a horizontal scrolling bar at the bottom.
Could the technical team fix this problem?
PS: Peter 123 has pointed out "View - Page Layout - Ribbon Layout" is the cause of the problem. And this problem seems to occur only with single page scanned document, like the pdf example I uploaded for your reference.
Just switch to Standard Layout and the problem is solved

Re: "Fit width" does not really fit window's width
I've tried to reproduce the problem with PDF-XChange Editor 5.5.316.0.
I am not able to.
You could check if the problem comes from PDF-XChange Editor itself or from something else.
If you have PDF-XChange Viewer or Adobe Reader on your computer, then verify if you have a similar problem in these too.
The problem might also be related to the actual display settings on your computer (screen resolution) or to the display driver itself.

Hello doquan0,
Thank you for the post. I too am not seeing this issue in the latest build. Could you please go to Help> About and tell us what version and build you are running?
Thank you!

Re: "Fit width" does not really fit window's width
After reading the above 2 posts, I have decided to "reset settings" and the problem seems to be solved. The build I'm using is 5.5 (build 316.0 Jan 11 2016), not fresh installation, just an update over an old build. Acrobat Reader DC, Nitro, Foxit do not have this kind of problem.
However, before resetting, I have exported my settings and upload it here for your reference. If you want to try, please backup your own settings, imported my below one and restart PDF-XChange Editor, open any PDF file with fit width option (or Ctrl+2) and you will see the problem.
(Now I need to reconfigure PDF-XChange again after resetting settings)

Re: "Fit width" does not really fit window's width
Hello doquan0,
It seems like you have only exported your "User Stamps collections".
While exporting your settings via Edit > Export Settings..., you have to activate/check which settings exactly that you would like to export. The main thing here, to allow for testing, are the "Program Options".
Best regards.

My export settings options only have
- Program Options
- History
- Plug-ins Additional Data (Spell Checker)
I have tried importing the settings I uploaded and it shows
- Program Options
- History (Merge History)
Nothing is related to "User Stamps collections" you have mentioned. May you try again?

Re: "Fit width" does not really fit window's width
Hi doquan0 and Willy,
I also downloaded the settings, and the adaption of the XChange Editor (version 5.5, build 316.0) to these settings worked fine. So I cannot confirm what Willy described. And (as doquan0 writes): Nothing is related to "User Stamps collections".
But on the other hand:
doquan0, I cannot reproduce the problem you reported:
I had another problem but perhaps this had no connection with your settings but with a wrong click on some button from my side: Suddenly I could not scroll down any longer the files because they ended after the first page. So I opened them in the PDF XChange Viewer (instead of the editor) and all the file (content) was there, I could scroll down without a problem. The same when I returned to my configuration of the XChange Editor.
PS:
Please try to change the option View --> Page Layout --> Ribbon Layout (Ansicht --> Seitenlayout --> Seiten nebeneinander)
to this one:
View --> Page Layout --> Standard Layout (Ansicht --> Seitenlayout --> Standardlayout)
I have the impression that the option "Ribbon Layout" ("Seiten nebeneinander") is responsible for the "problems" - both for the one you mentioned and (surely) for the one I mentioned above (that [vertical] scrolling was no longer possible).
Indeed in one pdf file I had the horizontal scrolling bar with "Ribbon Layout", and all was o.k. after changing to "Standard Layout".
It seems to me that our "problems" are not really problems but a logical consequence of chosing the option "Ribbon Layout":
"Standard Layout" shows you the pages of your file in the order from top to bottom (so you have always to scroll vertically to move within the file).
"Ribbon Layout" (strange expression) shows you the pages in the order from left to right (so you have always to scroll horizontally to move from one page to another). So it is completely logical that you see there always a horizontal scrolling bar (in case that your pdf file consists of more than one page).

I tried it with 3 or 4 pdf files and the fit width option always worked - that means: I never had a horizontal scrolling bar at the bottom, the files fitted into the window.doquan0 wrote:open any PDF file with fit width option (or Ctrl+2) and you will see the problem.

Re: "Fit width" does not really fit window's width
Thanks Peter 123 a lot, you have pointed the cause of the problem: Ribbon Layout. Ribbon Layout makes the pdf's content a little bigger than the window's width. This problem seems to occur with scanned document single page only. If anyone wants to try, you can download the pdf example I uploaded for you reference.Peter 123 wrote:

To solve the problem, I switch to Standard Layout. Very fast
(Just cannot understand what is the purpose of the Ribbon / Standard Layout.)

Re: "Fit width" does not really fit window's width
The term "Ribbon Layout" is strange (perhaps "Horizontal Layout" or something like that would be a more precise expression?) but its function is what I mentioned above (the German term "Seiten nebeneinander" makes it more clear):doquan0 wrote: (Just cannot understand what is the purpose of the Ribbon / Standard Layout.)
With "Ribbon Layout" you can view the pages of your file from left to right instead from top to bottom:

This would be "Standard Layout":

Re: Solved: "Fit width" does not really fit window's width
Hi all,
I've got to apologize. I did not load the settings file (PDFXChangeEditorSettings.xcs) from the folder where I had done the unzip. PDF-XChange Editor automatically pointed to the folder "C:\Users\willy\AppData\Roaming\Tracker Software\PDFXEditor\3.0" when clicking Edit > Import Settings... So, unconsciously, I saw a test file - with an identical name - of my own.
Now, I am glad to read that Peter123 found the explanation for the strange phenomenon.
I can indeed confirm that the "zoom"-factor raises a little bit when switching the Page Layout from Standard Layout to Ribbon Layout. One may wonder if or why it should. Myself, I do not see an immediate reason for it.
What concerns the terminology for Standard and Ribbon Layout, one could think about "Vertical" and "Horizontal" layout, or Scroll Pages Vertically or Horizontally, ...
Best regards (and sorry once again for creating the confusion).

Re: Solved: "Fit width" does not really fit window's width
Hello Willy,
If you have the document zoomed to e.g. Fit Width, or "Fit Window" - this will usually mean that you are limited by the width of the rendering window and not it's height. And with multi page documents - you will have a vertical scroll bar.
When you switch to Ribbon Layout - the vertical scroll bar disappears , so there is some extra width in which to fit the page - and that's why the zoom level increases. Have the zoom set to 100% and it will remain 100% when you switch.
As for the names - those are used by other software products as well, so that's why we chose them. I am glad that the German translations are clearer!
Cheers,
Stefan
