Print page number

Post by UPieper »

Hi,

either I'm blind, but I don't see an Option to print a pdf doc with the page number as footer/header. Could anyone give a hint where I can find that option?

Thanks in advance

No, its not supposed to be there. Page numbers should be included in the source PDF document if they are needed.

If you really need to mark this after the fact, and cannot get the source document (which would
be the best way to go):

1. Use the type writer tool to mark a page number on the first pge on the PDF
2. comment -> save (as .xfdf).

Look at the .xfdf file, there is a structure corresponding to that page number. It is in multiple lines, but
will work if the extra EOLs are removed. So edit it into a single line.

Replicate that line as many times as you want.

Change the page number in the relevant locations (at least 2, one indicates the PDF page, the other
the text for the page number). Perl or some other scripting language will be your friend if there are more than a few pages.

Save.

Open up the original file, comments -> import comments, read in the .xfdf file you just created.

Print the PDf with document + markup.

I have seen this problem before myself, most recently on a PDF from a PPT presentation for my son's
High School. It was 50 or so slides long, and they wanted the parents to print it out and bring it to an assembly. No page numbers on the slides. When printed at 6 slides/page, double sided, very easy to get lost without the page numbers.

Hi, thanks guys for the input.

UPieper, you could also use PDF-Tools. It has a page numbering feature where you have significant control over the placement and look of the page numbers.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm somewhat surprised that it's not possible to easily print with page numbers. I don't want to manipulate/change the pdf document, I'd just like page numbers to appear when printing a document, like it's done in Editpad for instance: http://www.editpadlite.com/index.html#download

There you can add page numbers in the print dialog.

Thanks

UP

PS: You could add that as an added feature of the PRO version :-)

HI again UPieper,

I see your point. If you 'reprint' the document to PDF again using our PDF-XChange print driver you can also add the page numbers to the document using the 'Headers/footers' feature. Again this is going to put that text into the PDF itself. Since what you are asking for is a similar headers/footers feature that can be accessed at print time when printing a PDF from the Viewer, my suggestion is to wait for V3 and then revisit this question. I think you may like what Santa brings...

Is that a hint that its release date has been pushed back to Christmas? ;)

Thanks for the help Nimrod_189,

I hope this will be useful to UPieper until ver3 is ready (in Q2 and not at Christmas time :P)

Cheers,
