Cutting a page in half?

Post by csimmons22 »

Newbie here, first time posting, please forgive me if this is obvious.
(I searched the forums first, and found nothing on this.)

I need to know if PDF-XChange will allow me to cut a long page in half?
I have a 13-page PDF that was created by an fax-to-email service, and several pages got combined because the sending machine would occasionally grab a couple of pages in rapid succession, registering two sheets of paper as a single long page.

These long pages are not the normal 8.5x11, but 8.5x20, or 8.5x21 (depending on how much overlap between the double-grabbed pages there was).
I need to cut these pages in two.
The crop tool simply cuts half of the page away, making it go away completely. I need the ability to take what is cropped and make a new page out of it.

Any ideas?

Hello Chuck,

It is not possible to split the pages only with our Viewer as if you would be e.g. cutting a loong sheet with a pair of scissors, but in a combination with e.g. our Lite printing driver (which comes bundled in your Viewer License) you could "print" any such document with long pages to our printing driver in a "Tile Large pages" mode.

You can modify the overlap so that when you later print the new PDF to real paper you do not lose any of the contents.

Best,
Stefan

Stefan;
Thanks for your reply.

After tinkering for a little while, I came up with a solution. It's a bit cumbersome, but it's effective. If you only have a few, it doesn't take too much time. I'm posting the solution here in case anyone else finds themselves with the same situation.

Step 1: Extract the "problem page" to a new file using the "Extract page to new file" feature, being sure NOT to delete the original page after extraction.
Step 2: Crop off the TOP half of the page in the new file that you have open, (by dragging down from the top) and save it.
Step 3: Crop off the BOTTOM half of the page in the original file (by dragging up from the bottom).
Step 4: Use the "Insert Pages" feature to place the page FROM the open new file INTO the original file, AFTER the modified page.
Step 5: Save the original file, and VOILA! Process complete. You can delete the new file if you like.

If you're reading this and need help implementing this solution, let me know and I'll provide more details.
Thanks!

Thanks Chuck,

That's a good solution indeed.

Please allow me to mention that still "printing" through the Virtual printing driver could be faster if you have more than 1 file and e.g. 2-3 long pages in each file.

Also you could simply preserve the original PDF with the longer pages (if it is not 100% required that all pages are Ansi A sized) for screen reading, and only use the method I described when you print to your actual hardware printer.

Best,
Stefan
