3 Issues with RTL languages

Post by tkarni »

Hi,

I'd like to report on these 2 RTL related issues and 1 encoding related issue I've found using the viewer v2.5.195:

1. Search in RTL language
When reading a PDF document with an RTL content language such as Hebrew and searching for a word in Hebrew within this doc, the viewer does not find it unless the word is typed backwards.
(Example on a word in English: finding the word "hello" is successful if the searched word is "olleh")

2. Copy-paste an RTL string
When copying a string from a PDF document with an RTL content language such as Hebrew and then pasting it in a text editor (or anywhere else applicable), the pasted string is revered.
(Example on a word in English: copying the word "hello" and then pasting it in MS Word results in pasting the string "olleh")

3. Browser plug in saves with gibberish file name
*This is not necessarily an RTL issue but more of an encoding issue*
When opening a PDF doc within FireFox 3.6.16 (viewer plug in) and having the PDF file name in Hebrew, saving the PDF is done with the wrong encoding for the file name thus the file name looks like a Gibberish string instead of the original Hebrew file name.
However, right clicking on the PDF web link in the web page and choosing "save link as..." results with the correct file name in the correct encoding.

Does the forthcoming v3 solve these issues?

Info:
PDF Xchange viewer v2.5.195
FireFox 3.6.16
Windows 7 64 bit, English UI

Thanks!
Tom.

Hi Tom,

with regards your questions on version 3 and are some issues resolved etc ..

1: Yes - we are in fact working on right to left support now for Hebrew and other relevant localizations for V3 inclusion.

2: same as above

3: I suspect we need to do some work here and will advise the dev team on this ..

Also - to be sure we have some relevant details to work on - can you please supply an example or 2 ?

Thanks and please note all files must be zipped before attachment to Forum posts
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Hi John,

Here is a link to a page with an example file (sorry, the "make link" tool doesn't work links with Hebrew, you'll have to copy and paste in the browser address bar):
http://math-wiki.com/index.php?title=קובץ:דוגמא.pdf
it contains a link to this file:
http://math-wiki.com/images/8/82/דוגמא.pdf

Here is another example:
http://www.che.org.il/download/files/קובץ התקנות.pdf

And another one. This time I copied the link and left the unicode translation of the characters in the address:
http://web.bgu.ac.il/NR/rdonlyres/CA216 ... %D7%91.pdf

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks,
Tom.

Hello Tom,

Our devs asked me to make a ticket for your case:
#1010: Viewer: Issues with RTL languages
As improvements in all three of your points are planned for ver3 and the ticket will help us in keeping track of those points you have commented and will also let our devs schedule them for implementation.

We will update this topic with any news as they become available from the dev team.

Best,
Stefan
