print dialog - way too high

Post by Arioch »

i have a rather old maybe desktop LCD 15" screen - 1024x768
It may arguable be best resolution for 15"

My relatives have Samsung notbooks
Q40 - 1024x600 - http://www.samsung.com/uk/business/b2b/ ... le/q40.htm
x420 - 1366 x 768 - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/laptops/ ... ifications

While laaaarge notebooks may sport resolutions like 1680x945 for most part the height is limited with 768 or even 600 scanlines.

Your Print dialog is way too large and can not be resized.
So either printer selection combo or print/cancel buttons would be out the screen

I think you print dialog should have rearranged or reduced version to fit into 600px height of notebook screens.
Currently it is next to unsuable for geeks on notebooks and absolutely unsuable for average persons, who did not remember alt+space hotkey and cannot move window without touching keyboard

Hello Arioch,

Our Print dialogue was originally designed to fit on a 800x600 screen - while it is slightly bigger now on the horizontal, (829x601 px on my screen) you should still be able to work with it on an 800x600 screen, and on your 1024 this should not be an issue at all.

The reason why this window can grow is the use of bigger font size and different fonts than the usual Tahoma with which this window was originally designed. So please have a look at this KB article on how to resolve this:
I have a problem with the Print Dialogue box being larger than my screen.

Best,
Stefan

quite maybe

fine fonts resolution (120DPI) are set indeed

regular resolution would lead to too small fonts to be usable for the person

so still i guess thee's need for dialog to make gracefull degradation or re-flowing

Maybe moving preview part to another tab and re-arrange what remains on 1st tab

Hello Arioch,

Yes we are considering changes in this respect but those would be coming in ver3 of the Viewer later this year:

pity.

i can only hope some features be backported into 2.x lineup :-)

Currently even Delphi (rather dumb about font resolution, see Skype dumbness for example) manages it better.
It would either not scale fonts and dialog at all and keep them at 96DPI, or make the whole dialog scrollable inside its window.
Both approaches are very ugly, but at lest make the dialog usable without spacial tricks :-)

Hello Arioch,

Yes agreed there are currently working solutions - but as you said yourself - they are rather ugly.
We have decided to offer an option for each user to modify the font and size for our application in particular - and that works much better, and as for a complete revamp and redesign - this will happen in ver3 I am afraid - but it is not that far away in the future and this feature would be available in the free Viewer for everyone - so I hope you will agree the prospects are good!

Best,
Stefan
