balloons w/added text not showing up in comment list

Recently, I updated to the latest version of PDFX Viewer (2.5195?), and I notice that since then, I am unable to see added/inserted text in the comment list.

For example, I can see a blue caret where the text has been added, I can see a balloon indicating added text, and when I hover the pointer over the balloon, I get a little box showing the insertion text--but none of that appears in the comments pane, and I am unable to interact (i.e., edit, delete) with the caret or balloon in any way, as if the comment had been flattened.

I imagine that the majority of these documents are coming from Adobe users.

This is very frustrating and has led to lots of extra work.

I tried to upload a screenshot to show what I mean, but neither .jpg nor .png was an acceptable extension.

We have just recently released build 196. I recommend updating to that and see if it resolves your challenge. Let me know if that works for you.

I found them by going first Comments\Show Comments\Open All Pop-Ups this opened the blue windows then I went to the comments pane at the top and clicked the little black arrow to the right of "Group By" and chose "Colour". Try that and let me know how it goes.

OK, that gets them open, but why can't I delete them, when I can delete any other kind of comment?

OK, I managed to delete one... but that's a very nonintuitive process. Maybe for the next version, the ability to just click on the little balloon or blue caret (which used to exist) could be restored.

Once you group them by e.g. colour - you could then click on the group name - and select delete.
In the sample file you provided I was able to click the blue "Cross-Out (44)" name and select the delete option - and the Viewer asked me whether I really want to delete all 44 comments.

I don't necessarily want to delete them; I want to be able to interact with them from the page rather than the comment list.

I used to be able to do this, so one of two things has happened:

1) PDFX Viewer has changed.

2) The PDFs have changed (perhaps Adobe X is doing something new?).

Yes we are constantly making changes to our products - but as far as I am aware the handling of comments should not have dramatically changed recently. You should still be able to delete the cross-outs - as for the small triangles adobe has added - they are locked and unavailable for editing in our Viewer.

OK, I understand.

However, for more than a year, I have been using your viewer to select and delete these marks, which have been visible in the comments list without "colors" activated until recently.

So, to clarify my prior statement:

1) PDFX Viewer has changed to become MORE INFLEXIBLE (which doesn't seem to make much sense).
or
2) The PDFs are different and PDFX Viewer is unable to handle the change.

Either way, it seems to me that it is incumbent on you to address the issue in future updates.

OK, your solution doesn't actually work. The pop-ups with the inserted text, the ones that are associated with the caret/balloon symbol, do NOT appear in the list when grouped by color. They appear blue on the screen, but no blue group shows in the comment list when grouped by color.

If I right-click on the pop-up, the "Delete" is grayed out.

I found that if I right-click and choose "add reply," then the pop-up will appear in the comment list, and I can delete it. However, this is not a reasonable long-term solution.

Odd. I thought you had it working.

I followed my directions and came up with this. (see image below)



As you can see there is a blue group and there is an option to delete. Are you seeing the same thing with just a red group? If you see many entries for your red group try un-expanding the group.( the little negative sign in the box at the left hand corner). They might be pushing your blue group to the bottom.

In the attached zip file, 'capture.png' shows what happens if I delete all blue: the cross-outs disappear, but the text boxes remain.

'capture2.png' shows the text box appearing in the comments list after I "Add Reply" to one of the comments. At this point, I can delete the text box comment in the list. However, if I resort the list before deleting, the text box disappears again, and I have to "Add Reply" again to get it back.

I have not been able to duplicate the challenge in another document. Is the one you posted the only one you are having a challenge with? Could you test it on another document and see if the result is the same?

All the files of this kind that come from Adobe users are the same in this way.

Again, this was not true until recently, so either the PDFs coming from Adobe are different or PDFX Viewer is different.

I just had a discussion with the guys in our dev team, and they are having a bit of a problem understanding which is the current outstanding problem (as the topic is a bit long and with quite some samples).
So could you please clarify - is the problem with the balloons that appear above the caret annotation (the small triangles behind words). If it is so - then we will support this type of annotations in the next version of our Viewer - and you will then be able to manipulate them. For now both the cater annotation and it's balloon can not be removed from a document using our Viewer.

The basic problem is that these carets/balloons (they are together) and the associated pop-ups seem to be uneditable by PDFX Viewer except under certain limited circumstances. Does that make sense?

Yes those are the carets/balloons that we are having issues with, and as you discovered the only way to get to editing one of these is quite complicated.

We will see to have this improved in ver3 of the Viewer expected later this year.
