We have the following strange issue:
For application reasons we have to save PDF separated from annotations (as XFDF). We therefore export and import annotations using the viewer SDK. Now we have a new interface to another international organisation that receives the PDF with embedded annotations. Thus we import the XFDF again and store the PDF with its annotations to another PDF file. We then transfer this PDF to the organisation, where it is renderred to a TIFF using Ghostscript. We now recognized that some annotations that are reimported using the viewer SDK are no longer rendered for some reason. I.e. there is some major difference between annotations added to a PDF using the user interface and those added via the import mechanism.
Moreover in some cases (as is the case for the example I attached), the PDF can only be opened by PDF-XChange Viewer. Opening it e.g. with Adode Acroread 9 causes the application to crash.
Is this a known issue addressed by some newer version of the viewer and/or the SDK? We are using version 2.5, Build 194.
To reproduce the problem I attached some example files:
1. Test-without-annotations: This is the initial PDF without any annotations
2. Test-with-annotations: It is based on the PDF from (1) with some annotations attached
3. Test-with-imported-annotations: The annotation of the PDF (2) are saved as XFDF (test-annotations.xfdf), re-imported into the PDF (1) and saved as PDF (3).
and the generated TIFFs.
As you can see the TIFF for (2) perfectly contains the annotation shown in PDF (2). But the TIFF for (3) no longer shows the annotations although PDF (3) still shows the annotation. If you now change the annotation using the viewer (e.g. in size) and save again, the TIFF generation works again. If I try to open PDF (3) with Adobe Acroread 9, the application crashes.
Thanks for your help
Martin

Re: Annotation compatibility issue when importing/exporting
Hello Martin,
It seems like we did fix some FDF issues in build 196:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFXV_h ... 2.5.0196.0
So yes - I would recommend you to try with build 199 (the current latest) and check whether this problem is still reproducible. If it is - do come back to us and I will pass this to our devs for investigation.
Also if you haven't updated your Viewer SDK key - it's likely that the one you have will not work with builds after 196.
So please follow the advise in this newsletter:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/newsletter/view/33
And we will provide you with your replacement key.
Best,
Stefan

Re: Annotation compatibility issue when importing/exporting
Adobe is crashing because the /IT entry in the annotation dictionary is /FreeTextTypeWriter instead of the standard /FreeTextTypewriter.
The annotation is invisible on exported TIFF file because after importing annotation the viewer didn't recreate the appearances for them. Now it is fixed too.
All fixes will be available in next build.
