Load .DAT automatically?

Post by bob_sun »

Hi,

I would like to ask a question on PDF-XChange viewer.

All settings can be output to a .DAT file and can be loaded with menu commands. However, is it possible to configure the application such that upon start, it will automatically load a certain .DAT file?

This is something similar to providing different startup options for many software of even OS with a configuration file (.ini, etc.) Could this be done with PDF-XChange Viewer?

Hello Bob,

Yes you can store the settings in a DAT file - and then load them back in the Viewer, but those are the kind of settings that you are not likely to need to change on a regular basis. I can see the need to have different settings for different users on the same machine - but if they are using different log-in accounts - the viewer will store their preferences separately in the registry. Another alternative is to have a few instances of the Portable Viewer - each with it's own custom settings (as they are stored in a file inside the portable Viewer's folder), and then launch the portable instance you need.

Otherwise I can not think of any other "automatic" way to load the Viewer with a given set of preferences - but you can always manually load any custom set you have once you have started the Viewer.

Best,

Stefan,

Two questions:
1. Many Windows applications can have "command line parameters" (or parameter in shortcuts properties) appended after the executable .exe file when launching, and this would cause different behavior. Is it possible to do this for PDF-XChange viewer? If PDF-XChange viewer is launched by (file name-program) association when double-clicking a .PDF file, is it still possible to enforce any command-line or shortcuts properties' parameter?
2. What do you mean by "portable viewer"?

Hello Bob,

Yes we do also have a few command line parameters that you could call with our Viewer - so if you create separate shortcuts - you could be launching the Viewer with different sets of options loaded in it every time.
(Please refer to the Viewer manual for the list of accepted command line parameters)

I am afraid however that if you just double click on a file - it will load with the latest settings used from the previous session, and there is no way that I can think of you could change this behaviour.

The "portable viewer" is a version of our PDF XChange Viewer that doesn't need an installation - and all the needed files (and settings) are stored in the same folder - so when you launch an instance of the portable Viewer - it will take it's settings from it's own folder and use them. So you can have the different preferences you need using the portable Viewer, but as it's portable it doesn't make file associations - so you will once again need to have the Viewer opened first before you can load a PDF document inside it.

The portable version is one of the Radio options in the "download" section of the Viewer page:
