Opening a PDF on a certain page/bookmark/comment

Post by joeran »

Hello,

is there a way to open a PDF via command line on a certain page or even better to open a certain bookmark? Something like

PDFXCview.exe mydocument.pdf -page:12

or

PDFXCview.exe mydocument.pdf -bookmark:bookmarkname/id

If not, I would like to request this feature :-)

Thank you and best regards

Hello Joeran,

And welcome to our forums.

Yes there is a way to open a PDF on a specific page using the command line:
PDFXCview.exe /A "page=10
For a full list of all the command line parameters please check section 1.8. Command Line option of the Viewer Manual (you can launch it by pressing the F1 key).

If your bookmarks are pointing to named destinations - you should be able to also use the
nameddest=<name> parameter.

Best,
Stefan

Dear Support Team!

I have experienced the following problem(s) with the PDF-XChange Viewer:
Hello,

we have always used Adobe Acrobat. Now we consider to be our complete company switch to PDF Xchange.

We have performed some tests. In this case, came out the following:
Anchor links are handled differently in PDF Xchange as Adobe PDF. For PDF Xchange have to "pdfxchange.exe / A nameddest = xxxxxxx" to indicate at adobe it is: "acrobat.exe nameddest = # xxxxxxx"

This is inkompatiebel and not so manageable.
Is there a way to convert PDF Xchange, which he at jump targets behaves exactly like an Adobe reader?

Please note the PDF-XChange Viewer has been superseded by the PDF-XChange Editor and no ongoing development is taking place with the Viewer any longer, so it is in your best interest to try the Editor rather than the Viewer as this is where all future improvements will take place - so it would help us and you if you used the Editor and we can then respond;

www.tracker-software.com/PDFXVE3.zip

The Viewer is still available for use if you prefer - but the important thing to remember is that there will be no future development.

If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Hi Berkermann,

Thanks for waiting and sorry for the late response. You should be able to use either of the following formats:

PDFXEdit.exe /A nameddest="G6.2393287" "c:\TestFiles\Documentation\PDF32000_2008.pdf"
or
PDFXEdit.exe /A nameddest=G6.2393287 "c:\TestFiles\Documentation\PDF32000_2008.pdf"

Cheers,

bevor we use PDF Editor, the documents jumps to the right place into the dokument.

called nameddest
nameddest in pdfEditor V3 is working other than adobe, right?
What must i do, that pdfEditor V3 do namddest like adobe?

I'm not sure that I understand - the manual has no way of knowing what section you want it opened to. You will have to manually navigate to the section that you need.

I'm also not sure that I understand what you're trying to achieve here - are you looking to run the command acrobat.exe /A nameddest... and have the Editor open?

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the sample file. There are quite a few links in that document - but only a few of them actually have any action assigned to them. Those that do have such actions work correctly in the Editor. And the rest do not work in neither of my test applications (including Adobe's Reader).

Attached is a screenshot in which you can see that I've opened your file in a browser and that some of the links have actions assigned to them, and if I click any of those - the Editor correctly takes me to page 6 in the file.

Or did I completely misunderstand what you are trying to achieve? If you can make a short series of screenshots of how this works in Adobe at your end (or ideally a video) and upload it here - that would help us greatly.

Regards,
Stefan

Hi Thomas,

Reading this:
http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/link- ... robat.html

Specifying the page when passing a web link is with the following format for adobe:
<link_to_pdf>.pdf#page=4
And the same works for the Viewer.
When I tried to open your sample file from my desktop pasting this link in a browser tab worked:

Code: Select all

file://localhost/C:/Users/Stefan/Desktop/TestDatei_Sprungmarken_eSpirit.pdf#page=3
however doing the same with the Editor plug-in as the active one didn't work. This behaviour is consistent between Adobe and our Viewer, and I will speak with the devs to make it work in the Editor as well. I've made a ticket for this in our internal system:
#2360: Editor can't open an online PDF on specific page

Stefan

Hi, we don't use the viewer, we use, you said it, the editor.

we don't mean: <link_to_pdf>.pdf#page=4 , which is the first variant.
we mean the second variant:
1) Open a PDF file to a specific page
> <A HREF="http://www.example.com/myfile.pdf#page=4">
2) Open a PDF file to a set destination
> <A HREF="http://www.example.com/myfile.pdf#glossary">

please test all variants.
Thank you

Hi Thomas,

Just tested with a named destination

Code: Select all

file://localhost/C:/Users/Stefan/Desktop/TestDatei_Sprungmarken_eSpirit.pdf#admin_server_presentation
The above line works in Adobe's reader to open the file on page 5 and doesn't in our products (both Viewer and Editor) - so I've updated the ticket above to include this as well.

Hi Thomas,

Now the ticket is with our devs, and they need to make the necessary changes for this to start working properly for the Editor. As soon as I know more I will post it here in this forum topic.

Stefan
