Request Feature: The PDF X-Change Viewer-Time Source.

Post by Jerome672 »

Hello,

I would like to request a feature in PDF X-Change Viewer. When a digitally signed and timestamped PDF document is opened by PDF X-Change Viewer, the time source is not mentioned in the Digital Signature properties.

It would be nice if this feature is made available in PDF X-Change Viewer. The Adobe Reader mentions the time source, whether it is from the signer's own computer or time stamped.

If this functionality can be made available, it would be nice.
Thanks.

Hi Jerome,

thanks for the suggestion. I have added this to the wish list for new features. New features to V3 are not currently being added as we approach it's initial release, however this may be something that can be added in a subsequent release. This will be at the discretion of the development team. While this does not constitute a promise to deliver said feature it is a committment to looking into it.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for taking in the suggestion. Yesterday i came across literature on the web as to why timestamping by a TSA server is important.

Digital Signature on a document itself is not enough because their tenure is for a period of 1 - 3 years. Hence when the legal validity of the digitally signed document is brought into question after that tenure is over (i.e the certificate has been revoked), it cannot be proved that this document existed at that point in time. As you know the time on the signer's computer can be manipulated and a digitally signed document can be made to appear to exist at a different point of time.

Here in the role of a trusted third party TSA servers comes into play. This provides a legal validity that the document existed at a particular point in time.

Hence it would be good if this important functionality is incorporated in PDF X-Change Viewer.

Thank you once again.
