I've used PDF XChange Viewer on a desktop pc and a netbook for a year or more, it is the best viewer I've ever used.
The desktop pc is shared with my wife. She does accounts and has to fill in and return a corporation tax form which HMRC (the UK equivalent of America's Infernal Revenue) insists, the arrogant b-----ds, must only be done on Adobe Reader.
Since she downloaded Adobe Reader onto the pc I find that any existing pdf's that I have saved on my HD open with PDF XChange Viewer, but new ones open in what appear to be their original windows (hope that makes sense).
I have opened the PDF XChange Viewer window and gone to Edit > Preferences > File Associations where I have clicked on Make Default PDF Viewer > Apply > OK, and there is no tick in Display PDF in Browser.
I have also opened my Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types and opted for PDF and PDFXML to open with PDF XChange Viewer.
I don't give a ---- what my wife uses but I want pdf's on my half of the pc to continue to open with PDF XChange Viewer. Please help to restore my sanity and save my marriage.
Using Version 2.5 (Build 201.0) on IE8 and XP.

Re: Default viewer problem
Hello fernman,
I am also in the UK, and all of the forms I've seen on the HMRC website do open with our Viewer and could be correctly filled in and saved, so maybe Adobe's Reader was just a recommendation there and not 100% mandatory.
As for the particular problem you are experiencing - a screenshot would be most helpful.
If you can show us what file you are trying to open (e.g. a local one or from a link online) - and the PDF application that opens on clicking this file - we should be able to advise further.
You will need to archive images before attaching them here as otherwise they will not be uploaded.
Best,
Stefan

Re: Default viewer problem
Hi Stefan, thank you for such a quick response to my query.
Yes, I've had this argument before with my wife when she has claimed the need for Adobe. I and our two sons have told her a pdf is just a file format that can be passed around and it doesn't make any difference what it is read in.
However, in this case she claims that when it comes to filling in the Corporation Tax form, which is on multiple pages, the HMRC instructs that one needs Adobe Reader to be able to use the site, and one has to use it otherwise it can't save a page and let you move on to the next page.
I have my doubts about this, but then who am I to argue with her?
Anyway, I have since rebooted the pc and it is no longer opening new pdf's in their browser windows like before. All new ones are now opening in Adobe Reader, while my older, saved ones still open in PDF XChange Viewer. I am guessing you won't need any screenshots for that.
What I would really like to do would be to uninstall Adobe, but I did that once before and I wasn't very popular because the next time my wife dealt with Corporation Tax she had to fill in a 16 page form all over again.

Re: Default viewer problem
Hello fernman,
There are some forms that e.g. upload data back to the server - we don't support there yet but are working on it, and for the rest - that just need filling and saving our Viewer should be just as fine.
For the particular problem - try to set our Viewer to "Display PDF in Browser" (Edit -> Preferences -> File Associations) - and they should start opening isnide the browser (and with our Viewer plug-in) once again.
Best,
Stefan

Re: Default viewer problem
Yes, that has done it!!!
I ticked the "Display PDF in Browser" box, and now I can view pdf's properly again - i.e. in PDF XChange Viewer.
Thank you so much for your help.
Hopefully that has postponed the divorce - unless my wife comes home and finds something that is now not working to her liking on her half of the PC!

Re: Default viewer problem
Good luck with that
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.
