Hello,
we are intending to replace the Adobe Products (as far as possible) with PDF-XChange Pro.
Now a problem has occurred:
Our users have inserted Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Document in many Office documents like Word, Excel, .. (Insert – Object – “Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Document” - Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Standard have to be available on the PC).
PDF-XChange Pro cannot handle these embedded objects. If I want to open the object, I get the following message: “Cannot start the source application for this object”.
Is there any way or workaround to open these objects without installing the Adobe Acrobat Reader?
Best regards
MFd

Re: Can't open embedded Acrobat documents
Hello MFd,
I am sorry but the problem originates in the way those objects are embedded. They are calling on a code that is specifically looking for the Adobe products - and there is no way for us to intercept those calls and make the files open in our Viewer.
Best,
Stefan

Re: Can't open embedded Acrobat documents
MFdCDrMA,
I had the same problem when I loaded PDF Viewer at the office. The real simple fix is to take the file and save to a CD/Blue Ray, make sure PDF Viewer is the default viewer and load it back up. It changes all the file names and associates them properly. Or at least it worked for me.
We have multiple pages of print, specifications and submittals per project. There were only 2 or 3 instances where the link didn't work because it was located in another outside PDF that had not been converted.
Hope this helps.

Re: Can't open embedded Acrobat documents
Hi
I just talked with a colleague which has the same problem: He
- deinstalled Adobe Prof,
- never had Adobe Reader and
- installed PDF XChange Prof 4, and now
-->> he has (in Office 2003 under Win XP) no more option (no command) to "Insert - Object - Adobe ...".
Where does this command (this option) come from?
Can it be replaced with PDF-XChange?
Regards
Peter

Re: Can't open embedded Acrobat documents
Hi Peter,
It most certainly comes with the Adobe installers, and for now we do not have an alternative to that and I also don't think we are planning one.
I'd recommend you to convert your Word doc to PDF first - and then add any necessary attachments to the PDF file directly.
Best,
Stefan

Re: Can't open embedded Acrobat documents
Hi Stefan
for me the conclusion is: "PCs without any Adobe product can not handle embedded Adobe Objects in MS Office"
Right? Or wrong?
If the conversion "Word to PDF" can not be done (because of unknown files; need to edit the Word, ...) - what is the alternative solution? Always keep an Adobe reader in the background? Or are there other (small) applications which handles this feature?
Thanks and regards

Hi Peter,
"PCs without any Adobe product can not handle embedded Adobe Objects in MS Office"
That is correct and it is due to the way those objects were embedded and the way they request Adobe only to open them.
There is no alternative other than having an adobe reader/acrobat installed (even if not used) to opening such attachments.
Best,
Stefan
