PDF-Xchange Viewer opening PDF files faster?

Post by gate1975mlm »

Hello,

Is there any chance PDF-Xchange Viewer could be enhanced to open PDF files faster?

I am not saying its terribly slow however I think it could be faster.

It does seem however that after you open the first PDF with PDF-Xchange Viewer which opens kind of slow the very next time you open a PDF it opens faster and almost instantly. Then hours later since opening a PDF it will become slow again when opening a PDF and then fast again the very next PDF opening.

Is there anyway to make PDF-Xchange Viewer to always open PDF files very fast like instant even if a PDF has not been opened in a while?

Also would upgrading to an SSD Hard Drive improve the speed of opening PDF files with PDF-Xchange Viewer?

Also just to let you know another pdf software called "Sumatra" opens the same pdf files very fast even if no PDF has been opened for a while.

So to sum up my issue if several hours go by without opening a PDF the very next time you open a PDF with PDF-Xchange Viewer it will take like 8 seconds or so. Where as the very next opening of a PDF is almost instant.

Maybe this has something to do with PDF-Xchange Viewer not being in "memory" when it has not been used for a while? And the reason its almost instant for the very next opening of a PDF is because PDF-Xchange Viewer is still in memory?

Will PDF-Xchange Viewer 3.0 be any faster?

If your tech supports guys could somehow enhance PDF-Xchange Viewer for when opening PDF's that would be great! :)

A lot of things are involved when a PDF file is opened - file system cache, memory fragmentation, etc. Also, the viewer analyzes the document during opening for annotations, form fields, etc.
so, the time required to open the document depends of the document. If you can provide us with some PDF files which cause delays on opening, it may be very helpful.

No, I don't think so. The current SSD prices are not worth the speed improvement on opening PDF files you will gain.
Will PDF-Xchange Viewer 3.0 be any faster?
Yes, it is. On most files V3 is much faster than current version of the viewer.

Its not really any particular pdf file. I just noticed this same pattern with any pdf file that I come accross.

Like for example I just opened this random pdf from this link below
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q= ... WMy4ePQJEw

And it took like 5 to 7 seconds to display. Then I closed it and open the same pdf again and this time it opened instantly.

However I am happy to hear version 3.0 should be much faster :)

Hello gate1975mlm,

Could those 5-7 seconds be due to you downloading the file?
It opened pretty instantly for me - but I've had the Viewer running the whole day.

In any case - v3 will be much faster :)

Cheers,
Stefan

No I am talking about when the file is on my desktop.

I have to admit my computer is getting a liitle old and also I do have a lot of crap on it.

I bet if I reformated and did a clean install it would allow these pdf's to open a lot quicker too.

Anyway lookig forward to trying 3.0 :)

Hi gate1975mlm,

as Ivan said - memory fragmentation and the system caching to the HDD could have such undesired consequences. Even if not a format - a defragment, and freeing up some memory by closing unused programs should do the trick to speed things up for now.

Cheers,
Stefan
