shellextension for merging / converting documents?

Post by Bubblegun »

Hello,

Is there a shell extension for the Windows Explorer that allows you to directly convert Word/Excel files to PDF and for merging two PDFs?
We just bought 1000 licenses for PDF-XChange Pro to replace the Adobe Standard, but now our users complain about the missing contextmenu features.

Is anything we can do about it? (well except for telling them to shut up and live with it)

Thanks for your time!

Hello Bubblegun,

We do have the Office2PDF helper application that comes with our Standard and Pro bundle packages - that can be run in the background and set up to monitor a folder - and any Word, Excel or html file that ends in there would be converted to PDF - and the pdf stored in a preconfigured location.

As for merging - it's not possible fromt he context menu - but is really easy with our Viewer. You can either use the Main menu-> Document - Insert pages option in the Viewer, or if you want to visually drag and drop pages between opened PDFs you can see how this is done in this KB article:
How do I Move pages between opened documents in the Viewer

Best,
Stefan

Hello Stefan,

thank you for your quick reply. Users wish for the most simple solution, to right-click a document and get the option to convert it to PDF or merge it if possible. The monitored folder would be overkill since they are confused enough with the missing options. Currently they have a delay of about 2-4 seconds per document since they have to open and print it manually. Merging ... well ... I don't think anyone found the option to do so since replacing the Adobe Acrobat Standard.

Our department heads present us calculations about the "delay" thing ... 2-4 seconds * 10 documents/day * 900 employees = 5-10 hours more work per day, which is a new person to be employed.
Although I can't support their calculation, we still have to do everything possible to reduce the delay back to zero.

Is there any chance that these shell extension options come with a future program version if it is not possible with the current one (PDFXC 2012 PRO 5.0.260.0)?

Thanks for your time!

P.S.
I'll try to make a manual for our employees so they are able to merge PDFs based on the link you posted!

Hello Bubblegun,

While it will not be named "convert to PDF" - if your colleagues select a file, right click on it and then select the "print" option from the context menu - this will launch the printing process for this kind of file - and they can then directly select where to save the resulting PDF, and if they select an already existing file and the "Append to Existing PDF" checkbox - this will directly append the new content to the already present PDF document.

Best,
Stefan
