Re: Add named destinations to a pdf
Hi Andrew,
welcome to the forums and thanks for the post.
If you open the PDF-Xchange Viewer manual (Help --> Contents or F1) then do a search for the string "named destination" (include the quotes so that it is the full string that is searched not either word alone) you should find 24 entries. There is quite extensive documentation on how to use and create named destinations.
If you have further questions after going through that let us know.

Re: Add named destinations to a pdf
The manual provides descriptions of the application's GUI labels.
The manual does not explain how to add named destinations.

Hi Andrew,
take a look at page 93 (g) --> (i) New Named Destination. Allows you to create new destination name.
Essentially you set the View you want in the preview and click "Add Current View" to create a 'New Named Destination'

Re: Add named destinations to a pdf
Thanks for the tip. I've been using document editing applications for 20 years. However,
I am a new user of this application and have no idea how to get to the place in the GUI that 93 (g) --> (i) refers to.
I hope you can help me get there?

Re: Add named destinations to a pdf
Sorry Andrew,
I guess that from time to time one gets so used to something that one expects others to know some things I take for granted so thanks for calling me on that.

does that help?

By this I mean page 93 of the Viewer manual (Help --> Contents --> Type 93 in the 'Pages Navigation Toolbar'), then section (g) subsection (i) Here is a screen shot of that part of the manual.page 93 (g) --> (i) New Named Destination.
does that help?

Re: Add named destinations to a pdf
Navigating the help file is easy. What I don't know is how, in the application, to get to the point where I can add a named destination. The help file offers explanations of the GUI but not the long sequences of steps to perform actions. Mayebe, in a few hours spent, I could explore the application and the help file and learn how to add named destinations. But I am hoping the steps are recorded somewhere and can be shared, saving all the inquirers the time it takes to figure it out.

Happens - especially at your age mate - but don't worry, gets better as you get older

Re: Add named destinations to a pdf
Thanks Paul! That's getting closer to what I need.
I realize my requirements statement is incomplete, so here's a try at being clear. I hope this will explain what I need to do and help you determine how/if it can be done.
I have two documents: a process diagram and a companion reference guide, both with many pages.
Every step in the process diagram is contained in a text box, with a short description of the step and every step has a "key" represented by a label with a letter - "A", "B", etc..
In the reference guide, each step is fully described. The steps are arranged in a table and the first cell in each row is the letter key - "A", "B".
The goal is to hyperlink the boxes in the process flow, so that clicking the hyperlink in the process step opens the reference guide at the corresponding row.
In another pdf editing application, the steps are:
1. Open the reference guide.
2. select the letter key cell in the table, e.g. the key "A".
3. select "Add".
4. Type the name - "A".
5. Repeat for each step in the reference guide.
6. Open the process diagram.
7. Select the process step "A".
8. Insert a hyperlink, e.g. "http://webservername/foldername/referen ... name.pdf#A"
9. Repeat for each step in the process diagram.
The instructions you posted explain how to use named destinations within a document. I was unable to determine how to achieve the result I need using the steps you described.
FYI - the advantage of a named destination is that it is attached to the text, not to a page. Then if pages are added or removed, the named destinations still point at the correct text.

Re: Add named destinations to a pdf
Hi Andrew,
thanks for the clarification, it is most helpful. I see now what you are wanting to do and it seems reasonable to me. I have never done what you are describing so I'll have to spend a little time 'playing' with this and will post what I come up with. I'll try to put something together this afternoon if things quiet down at all.
It might be helpful to use your PDFs so if you are free to attach them to this post that would help.

Thanks again Paul. Unfortunately, I can't post the files I'm using. They're of a proprietary nature by content and even the layout provides a competitive advantage. In other words, my boss would disapprove strongly!

No t a problem Andrew,
that's mostly for your convenience. I'll make something generic. That's probably better anyway as I can them add another KB article or modify the one I made..
