Fixed - PDF titles not displayed win Windows Explorer - WHY?

Post by dlb2784 »

Recently my computer at work was upgraded from XP to Windows 7 Enterprise. I also have Adobe Acrobat X Pro installed. I discovered that a feature which I loved in Windows XP no longer worked - displaying the titles of PDF documents in Windows Explorer details view - when you add the Title column to the view.

Win Explorer would display titles of Microsoft Office document however the titles of PDF files were all blank.

After extensive google searches, I was led to your site and installed the free version of PDF-XChange viewer (with the shell extensions and iFilter). And magically, my titles appeared in Windows Explorer! So you fixed my problem and I thank you for that! :D

I would like to propose to my company leadership that they make your product available to everyone who needs this capability (we have an official review board that approves software for use in the company) but in order to make a business case for that I need a few answers.
  • Did you deliberately fix this issue? I.e. is this an intentional feature in the tool? Or was it a side effect of some other feature you created?
  • Do you intend to continue to support this particular functionality in future versions of the tool?
  • Is the PDF XChange Viewer required? Or did this "fix" appear because of the shell extensions and/or iFilter capability?
Obviously I'm asking because I don't want to recommend a tool for corporate use that stops working in the next version.

Many thanks for solving an incredibly annoying problem. I can't tell you how much this makes my life easier!

Hi dlb2784,

Thank you for your post, we are really happy that you have considered our product as our PDF document reader. The title of a .pdf document is just another property of the document such as author, subject and others. These properties are set when the document is created by the author of the document and they are not mandatory to be completed but they are part of the document, in other words, they can be empty but they are always there. There is not any reason to change these properties in the future so they will be supported in the next versions for sure. I don't believe you need to have PDF-XChange Viewer installed to see the titles of .pdf documents. In fact, many documents don't have a title set and they will not show one at Windows Explorer.
I hope that answers your questions, if you any further questions please feel free to come back.
Thanks.

Sincerely,

Perhaps I did not make myself clear.
With Windows 7, Windows Explorer set to Details view with the Title property column displayed, PDF files that DO contain a Title in their properties displayed with blank titles.
In other words, if I had a directory full of PDFs all of which had a valid Title in their document properties and displayed this directory of files in Windows Explorer (details view), the Titles were not displayed. They were blank.

After I installed PDF-XChange, the titles were displayed.
I understand that Title is a document property as are other properties such as Author.
My point is that with Windows 7, these properties would not display properly in Windows Explorer ... until I installed PDF-XChange.

Note: Document properties such as Title and Author within Microsoft Office files worked properly - probably because Microsoft makes those products. It was only the PDF files which did not work.

Reference the following thread for additional information relating to the problem. Note the post by "Docta G" which is what led me to your product.

Hi dlb2784

Thank you for your reply and the reference to the article. Honestly, we were not aware of this problem because we are not directly related to the issue. Our shell extensions support both architectures 32 and 64 bit.
Regarding your questions in particular:
Did you deliberately fix this issue? I.e. is this an intentional feature in the tool? Or was it a side effect of some other feature you created?
The issue never existed for us as our shell extensions support both 32 and 64 bit architectures
Do you intend to continue to support this particular functionality in future versions of the tool?
Yes, ongoing support on shell extensions for both 32 and 64 bit architectures
Is the PDF XChange Viewer required? Or did this "fix" appear because of the shell extensions and/or iFilter capability?
Yes, the shell extensions are part of the PDF-XChange Viewer installation, and are not a product on their own.
Thanks.

Sincerely,
