Trouble emailing PDF from PDF-Viewer

Post by Econdoc »

I am using Win 7, Firefox, and Thunderbird. Let's assume that I am viewing a PDF file with the viewer. If I try to send the PDF as an email attachment, I always get a message box titled "Email", with the following message:

There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.
The interesting thing is that sometimes, but not always, the email program will open with the PDF file as an attachment. Other times, it does not. It seems to (silly) me, that an association error is not the cause of this, or it would NEVER work.

Any suggestions, ideas, comments?
Thanks.

Hi Econdoc,

I have seen that on Occasion with my instance of Win 7 and Thunderbird. What fixed it for me was going to 'Default Programs' in the Windows Control Panel --> Set your default programs --> Thunderbird --> Choose defaults for this program --> MAPI --> Check that this is selected.

If it already is, un-check all, save it then go back in and set them all back on. The most important one is the MAPI Send mail.

Can you try that and let me know how it goes?
Best regards

Sad to say, Paul, it still does the same thing. I can sent the PDF as email, but the error window still pops up. I can just ignore the error window, but I would rather not have to do that.
I tried this two ways: (1) with a PDF on a website (Firefox as the browser) and (2) with a PDF that was on my computer. Error message either way.

Thanks much for the advise. Maybe others will have different ideas for a fix.

Hi again Econdoc

we are actively looking into this. It appears that this may be specific to 64 bit systems. Specifically this message is popped out by the MAPI stub dll in 64-bit OS and for now we don't know why it happens. We are continuing to investigate.

Can you perhaps help us here by testing on your system Send by Email from the 'Portable Version? The Portable version is always 32 bit and as we are having trouble reliably reproducing the issue it would be particularly helpful to know if it happens on your system in 32 bit.

Get the portable version here: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFX_Vwr_Port.zip, extract it and run by launching the Viewer executable from that folder then let us know how that goes?

please and thanks.
Best regards

Paul:
I installed and ran the 32-bit portable version as per your request. No joy. I still get the same message.

Interesting that even though the message appears (in both the 64 and 32 bit version), the feature works. That is, the PDF gets attached to a new email in Thunderbird.

Anything else you would like me to try?

Thanks for that Econdoc,

to be honest I'm going to have to have the developer who is working on this give me his feedback as to what may be helpful to move this forward. I wouldn't expect to hear from him until Monday West Coast Canada time however.

I'll post here when I hear more.

thanks for working with us on this. :-)
Best regards

Thanks for that Econdoc.

What you can do that will help is export and send us the following registry keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Clients
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients

Make sure to zip them in an archive or the forum software will strip the attachment.

Are you comfortable exporting registry keys? I can guide you if needed.

I've got the same sort of problem, but with WinXP Pro and Thunderbird. The message I get is:

Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client.

I dismiss the message and a Thunderbird email message is created with the correct attachment. Curiously, after doing this once, I don't get the message any more unless I close PDF XChange and re-open it. I have checked my default mail settings everywhere I know to look. I *think* this started as of the last PDF XChange update (version 2.5.207), but it could have been a Thunderbird update that triggered it. I do know that the behavior only started in the last month or so.

Hi capn_buzzcut

that's exactly what I see also. We are continuing to investigate. Things are very busy right now with the approaching V3 Candidate Release so I would ask your indulgence if this takes a little time.
