Can't open pdf's in Firefox 19.

Post by gate1975mlm »

How do I get pdf files to open in Firefox 19 using PDF -XChange Viewer?

I installed Firefox 19 and all pdf's now open in the new default pdf viewer instead of PDF -XChange Viewer. So I then found out how to disable it at the followig link.
http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/928049

But everytime I click on a pdf link firefox 19 now downloads it to a folder instead of opening it in the browser using PDF -XChange Viewer plug in.

I checked and the PDF -XChange Viewer plug in is enabled.

Any help would be great.

Type the address about:config
Search for entry pdfjs double click on the entry pdfjs.disabled;false and it will toggle to true
Then go to
Tools
Options
Applications
Under PDFXchange viewer document
Change it to Use PDFXchange viewer in Firefox

Hi Guys,

Thanks for helping out there Oldjim, it's much appreciated :)

gate1975mlm: you also make sure that you disable any other PDF Reader application from that same menu, as they can sometimes conflict. You also need to go to Edit --> Preferences --> File Associations and make sure that option to display in browser is checked.

HTH!
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Best regards

Thanks guys this worked great! :)

I have to say though I think Firefox really should make it a little easier to disable the pdf reader in future builds.

They've actually gotten worse in recent builds. Time was once when you didn't need to disable anything, the most recently enabled just worked...

I have the same problem with FF 19 under Win 7. FF opens in the viewer instead of the browser. I tried the solution here and it did not work. But, strangely, in IE the PDF opens in the browser. Works in Chrome when I disable the Adobe plugin and the internal pdf viewer.

So the problem seems to be with FF. Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks

Hi bertradio

did you both explicitly disable all other PDF plugins and go to Tools --> Options --> Applications --> PDF --> and select "Use PDF-XChange Viewer (in Firefox)?

The only PDF plugins on my system are PDF-Xchange and Adobe Reader. Adobe reader is disabled. PDF-Xchange is enabled.

I do not see an option for Use PDF-Xchange Viewer (in Firefox).

My dropdown for Adobe Acrobat Document has:

Use PDF-Xchange Viewer
Use PDF-Xchange Viewer (Default)
Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)

Hi bertradio,

Please try selecting the "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)" option, and check whether Adobe's or our Viewer's plug-in will load PDFs inside FF.

Best,

I finally got it to work. I needed to repair Adobe Acrobat, then disable, enable, etc. Acrobat and PDF-Xchange several times. Now I see Ise PDF-Xchange Viewer (in Firefox) in the list and when I select it PDF's open in the browser with PDF-Xchange viewer. Must have been some corruption in FF that was fixed with the disable/enables.

Thanks for the attention to this.

Hi bertradio,

thanks for that. I must confess that sometimes the way FF recognizes plugins confuses me. One shouldn't have to work this hard to get a plugin active...

Regardless - I'm pleased that all is well tan that you have it working.

Do let us know if we can be of further assistance.

I have the same problem (no entry for "Use PDF-Xchange Viewer (in Firefox)"), and the solution described two comments ago is really too vague to be helpful. If anyone has a specific set of steps to do, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi Brian,

And is there a "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)" option in that menu?

Best,
Stefan

I am going to jump in because I'm having the same problem: when I click on a pdf on a webpage, the file downloads but does not open.

I do not have an "in Firefox" option for PDF-Xchange but I do have one for Adobe. The Adobe plugin is disabled. I have followed the advice listed above to no avail.

If it is not possible to get it opening in Xchange, is there a way to return to the native method and allow Firefox to open it with its built-in functionality?

Other suggestions? Thanks very much.

Hi Merk07,

Thanks for the post - have first made sure that the option to display a PDF in browser has been selected, from within the preferences of the viewer? If not, then please go to Edit -->
Preferences --> File Associations
and select the check-box, then hit Apply --> OK.

Let me know if that helps,
Will

Yes, I should have mentioned that the preference for "Display PDF in Browser" is enabled. I apologize for the oversight.

Since my initial post, I found some guidance that suggested deleting the mimTypes.rdf file in my Firefox profile folder. I did that. Now pdfs that I try to access through Firefox will open automatically in a separate PDF-Xchange window but not inside Firefox. That is a BIG improvement, but it would still be better if I could get the document to open from within Firefox.

Thanks for your quick response. Your help is greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you have additional suggestions.

Hi Merk07,

what options do you see in FF Settings when looking at the PDF Application settings? Options --> Applications --> PDF

Image

You should have an option to us the PDF-XChange Viewer in filefox as in my screen shot. One thing I will say however is that this is not always the case and I've never been able to nail down exactly why FF sometimes shows different options here.

Does that help?

That does help and you have solved my problem!

The Application settings in Firefox was where I started my troubleshooting two days ago. At the time, I did not have an "in Firefox" option for PDF-Xchange but did have a PDF-Xchange option. I only had an "in Firefox" option for Adobe. My results did not vary regardless of what option I selected. After seeing your suggestion today, I returned to the settings and the options are now different and -- presto! -- the "in Firefox" option for PDF-Xchange is now visible.

I am guessing that the process of deleting my mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox Profile folder must have reset the system in a way that corrected my options. Thank you for reminding me to revisit the ground already plowed!

Your time and assistance are greatly appreciated.

My pleasure Merk07, I'm pleased to hear it worked.

I guess we chalk one more up to the "interesting" way FF manages mime types. If anyone has a better understanding of why Firefox changes this I'd love t hear.

cheers
