Advanced scanning setting?

Post by steven hall »

I had to reformat my computer last weekend and reinstall all my programs. After reinstalling my PDF-XChange Viewer Pro, I attempted a PDF creation from my printer's scanner (as I have done countless times). After selecting the option "from scanner..." then selecting my specific printer (it's the only option given) and then choosing scan, I am given a very basic small box asking me "What do you want to scan" with basic functions like color picture, greyscale picture etc. rather than the larger (and more advanced) box. I have tried selecting the Custom settings option (under the black and white or text option) and clicking both preview and scan but cannot seem to get the larger Advanced settings box that I am accustomed to. I have also looked through "Preferences" but can't seem to find anything that will change this current default setting. I assume I'm missing something here but for the life of me, I can't figure out what it is. Can anyone advise me?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Hi Steven,

It sounds like possibly you are defaulting to using the Windows 'Wia' drivers rather than the twain drivers from your scanner manufacturer ...

This can be because you are using 64 bit Windows and therefore our installer will install the 64 bit version of the PDF-XChange Viewer - but possibly you only have the 32 bit twain drivers available for your scanner...

Therefore - see if you can acquire 64 bit drivers from your scanner suppliers web site - or download and install the portable version of our viewer which is by default 32 bit - and then this will be able to use your 32 bit scanner drivers - from this page;

https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/downloads

Just unzip the file and copy to a folder and start the .exe program file.

Hope that helps.
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Hi John. Thanks so much for your quick and detailed reply.

I downloaded two different versions of my Canon MP600 printer/scanner's 64 bit drivers. Unfortunately, neither fixed the problem. On the plus side, your suggestion to download and install the 32-bit "portable" version of PDF-XChange Viewer worked like a charm, enabling me to select the "Twain" printer driver (when choosing "scan") and get the advanced settings box again!

One question...do I lose any overall functionality by using this "portable" version of PDF-XChange Viewer as my default PDF viewer rather than my original purchase (the non-portable version)? I'm assuming the portable version zip I downloaded simply excludes the 64-bit and only contains the 32-bit version, but just want to be sure...

Thanks again for your help--I really appreciate it!

Steven

Hi Steven,

you can have both installed - and either way you should not lose functionality - it sounds like you may have 32 bit windows rather than 64 bit - so you could also try and install the Canin 32 bit Twain drivers and see if that resolves...

Sorry, I should have mentioned my OS. I am running Windows 7 64-bit now. However, my OS a week ago (before the reformat) was 32-bit. I decided to install the 64-bit version this time around, since I've never tried it before. Clearly, that is why I always had the advanced scan setting before the reformat of my 32-bit system.

I'm not sure why the 64-bit drivers I downloaded and installed from the CANON website didn't fix the issue...?

That depends on what your 64 bit drivers are offering you. If you can access your scanner from some other 64 bit application I would expect you to see the same as when using the Viewer because it should access the same scanner drivers as our Viewer does.

I'm not sure if you have any other true 64 bit applications on your system that can be used for this. You could always install the 64 bit version of GIMP and test with that - http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/

Hi Paul. Thanks for the response.

I installed GIMP and you were right; I get only the WIA-Canon MP600 option to choose when attempting to scan. Perhaps I didn't install the 64-bit drivers correctly? Admittedly, this is my first attempt at a 64-bit system so it's likely I've missed something!
