Save the documents position in a separate file

Post by Leo14 »

I store PDF-documents in DropBox to read and work with them on different machines. So the annotations I make will be synchronized on every PC. What I'm missing is the possibility to open the document at the same position, where I left it on an another PC. Is it not possible to write the position where I leave the document in a separate file, which will be synchronized, to open it on an other machine at the same position?

Hi Leo,

Thanks for the post - if you go to Edit --> Preferences --> Page Display and check the box for "Restore the last used view of document..." and do this of each of the machines that will be Viewing the document, then you should have no further troubles.

Also, do note that a separate file isn't required.

HTH!

Thank you for your answer.
But this cannot work. And I tried it. It is true that you can open a document on the same position when you are opening it again. But I think this information is saved locally.

There is no change in the document itself. When I leave the document on an other position without changing it, there will be no synchronization made by DropBox. How does your program on another machine will know the position to open it?

Hello Leo,

Please try to open a file in our Viewer on one machine and the go to File -> Document Properties (Ctrl-D) -> Initial View, and change the settings there. Those changes should be stored inside the PDF file itself, and then when you open it on another machine with another instance of the Viewer it should respect those changed settings.
Please also make sure to turn off the "last view" option Will suggests, as this could cause some trouble when you open the same file a second time on one of your machines.

Best,
Stefan

Are you sure that your proposal is that I open the properties of the document and put in the actual pagenumber by hand before I leave the document. Please be serious. That is not a real solution.

Hi Leo,

Firstly I apologize my initial response to you, I misunderstood the question. As to your response to Stefan; yes, that is the solution. Once it's written to the document via the properties and the document is saved, it will then continue to open to that page for anyone Viewing the document, whatever Reader/Viewer they are using. Is this not what you needed?

I wrote it in my first letter. I need a simple possibility to continue reading a document on an other pc using DropBox for synchronizing the documents. I want to read the same document on different pcs like I can do it with my Kindle. I can imagine that other people also have the same requirement for a PDF reader. Since there must be a simple solution.

Hi Leo,

I'm afraid that I don't quite understand... In your initial post, you said
What I'm missing is the possibility to open the document at the same position, where I left it on an another PC
What I and my colleague have garnered from this is that you want the document to open to the page that it was last Viewed on another PC. The only way to do this is by using the portion of the Document Properties that Stefan specified. The fact that it doesn't do this by default is the same for any and all applications, for any and all file types that I have ever encountered - be it Adobe's Reader for PDFs, or MS Word for .doc/.docx files.

If you are asking for a method for the Viewer to recognize, inherently, the last last Viewed page and portion of that page, on another computer, then automatically open it in exactly the same place on another computer, then I don't know whether such a thing is even possible. I'm fairly sure that it isn't practical either, as this would annoy the vast majority of our users. I would suggest that you try Stefan's suggestion before knocking it, as you may it will do what you need.

I'm not sure what you mean..... if the document is saved with the information that you want on/in it, then uploaded to DropBox, others will View it as it was after you last saved it.

If, however, what you're looking for is a way to save annotations so that others can view them when opening the document on another PC, then this is automatically done when saving the document. If you're finding that it doesn't do this, then I would suggest first making sure that you have Version 2.5 Build 210 by downloading and running the following:
