Thumbnails for PDF files in folders not working any longer!
Hello,
I just realized after installing PDF-XChange Editor 3.0 Build 300 that PDF's are not showing as thumbnails any longer in folders.
Hopefully this can be fixed.
I am running Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit

Hello gate1975mlm,
Thanks for reporting that. Please try also installing the Viewer - and it's Shell Extensions will allow you to have previews of your PDF files in a folder. We will see to include the shell extensions to the Editor installer as soon as possible too.
Best,
Stefan

Showing thumbnail (as many other features with PDF files in the Windows Explorer) are not implemented directly by the Viewer or the Editor, but by the separate component called "Shell Extension" which may be installed by the Viewer's installer.
New version of the Shell Extensions based on the Editor's code base is coming.

Nice looking forward to it

Re: Thumbnails for PDF files in folders not working any long
I only get PDF thumbnails in Windows Explorer if I set PDFXChange Viewer as standard PDF handler. However, I'd rather use another program as standard viewer (this doesn't mean that I don't use PDFXChange Viewer all the time).
So, is there a way to have the PDFXChange Viewer Shell Extension handle Thumbnail generation, and at the same time not having set PDFXChange Viewer as standard PDF handler in Explorer?
Regards David.P

Hi David,
Thanks for the post - the easiest way to do this, is to re-register the shell extensions with your preferred Viewer/Reader set as default. Type in "CMD" in the Windows search bar, then right click the Command Prompt and select "Run as Administrator". Next, copy/paste or write the following:
regsvr32 "c:\program files\tracker software\Shell Extensions\XCShInfo.dll" - please include the quotation marks. Hit enter and everything should be fine.
Cheers, hope that helps!

If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Re: Thumbnails for PDF files in folders not working any long
Thanks Will, for your valuable help.
This is odd, I just was going to try it, and changed back to Acr*bat 7 as standard PDF handler.
Then I checked an old folder with PDF's of mine and expected to see only PDF icons not thumbnails, as it always was the case when picking the above program and not PDF-XChange Viewer as standard PDF handler.
However, what I saw was that PDF thumbnails were still and again being generated and shown in Windows Explorer. Well, I guess this is due to the fact that recently I installed the F*xit Viewer (which, although it has improved a lot, I continue to never use because it still is so clumsy), and now the F*xit PDF handlers generate the thumbnails, in some way.
Anyway, I will keep your instructions around, just in case my PDF thumbnails should get lost again in the future.
BTW, and just for completeness, the main reason for me still using Ad*be Acr*bat 7 as standard PDF handler after all those years I have described here a while ago:
Defining targets for internal hyperlinks

(strangely, I can't seem to make any working hyperlinks anymore in a forum post)
Keep up the great work,
Regards David.P

Re: Thumbnails for PDF files in folders not working any long
Thanks for the post David!
Glad that you got your thumbnail previews back -even if in an unexpected way
Link creation editing should be improved in the Editor compared with what is currently available in the Viewer.
And as for the links - direct links have indeed been disabled lately - but you can still post the address as a plain text string, and most browsers will convert that to a link with the proper settings.
Best,
Stefan

Thank you Stefan -- I am then looking forward very much to the improved link target editing in the new Editor.
