A few features I miss and a bug maybe?

Post by Terrixy »

Hi,

I've been using PDF-Xchange viewer pro for years and generally very satisfied with it. Very excited about the new release of editor, but have found some features lacking compared to viewer. 1. Closing the tab using mouse mid button, 2. highlight tool, 3. quick minimizing button for the bookmark pane, 4. font property of selected text, to name a few of them. Am I overlooking the settings or are these going to be added in future releases? And the sub-pixel rendering of editor is indeed much better than viewer. But I remembered it was mentioned somewhere that there would be fine tuning settings for it. Will this be added in future releases?

Lastly, I'm having problems printing documents double-sided on a Samsung ML-4551ND. They always come out single-sided. Is this a bug or a problem with my setup? (No such problem with Viewer 2.5)

Many thanks and have a nice day,
Terrixy

Hello Terrixy,

Thanks for the kind words for the Editor :)
I will use the same numbers as you to reply to your questions/notes without including them here:

1) This should depend on the default action set for your middle mouse button - and it should generally work the same for both Viewer and Editor. Please confirm if it's the same machine on which you have the Viewer and Editor and monitoring the different behaviours.

2) Will be added in a future build (expected before the end of the month).

3) Ctrl-B works both in the Viewer and Editor. Could it be that you've changed this from the default to something else in the Viewer?

4) The options are there - but for now you can only edit existing text (see the attached image). Typewriter and text area tools will be added in a future build along with the highlight tool.

5) The printing engine in the Editor is completely different from that in the Viewer, so please do make sure that you've checked all the settings possible - including in your printer's drivers as you now might need to turn the double side printing from there.

Best,
Stefan

Wow, that was quick :D Thanks Stefan! Here are my inputs/comments.
1) This should depend on the default action set for your middle mouse button - and it should generally work the same for both Viewer and Editor. Please confirm if it's the same machine on which you have the Viewer and Editor and monitoring the different behaviours.
Sorry, I guess I should've used the word scroll wheel :D Yes, I use the Viewer and Editor on the same Win 7 x64 machine. In Viewer, I can hover the mouse over any tab and click the scroll wheel to close it. It doesn't work for me in Editor...
2) Will be added in a future build (expected before the end of the month).
This is great! Thanks!
3) Ctrl-B works both in the Viewer and Editor. Could it be that you've changed this from the default to something else in the Viewer?
I never realized there was a hot key for that :D In Viewer, there is this tiny little bar with a small triangle inside right beside the bookmark pane. It's really handy to hide/show the different panes. Really wish Editor could come with the same feature...
4) The options are there - but for now you can only edit existing text (see the attached image). Typewriter and text area tools will be added in a future build along with the highlight tool.
I see. Guess I was lazy, and forgot to expand the toolbar. :D
5) The printing engine in the Editor is completely different from that in the Viewer, so please do make sure that you've checked all the settings possible - including in your printer's drivers as you now might need to turn the double side printing from there.
I indeed played around with the printing options in the printer property. But strangely all printouts from Editor are single-sided, whereas those from Viewer are as configured. Maybe just my setup? Wish you guys could share your results on physical printers.

By the way, how about the settings of sub-pixel rendering :) This is actually one of the main reasons I would like to switch to Editor. Other than this feature and 3D support, the Viewer is almost perfect to me.

Thanks!

Hi

To be honest I didn't even know this was possible. I learned something new about the Viewer today... ;-) I'm not sure if this is planned for the Editor or not. We'll have to basically wait and see. If it's in the Viewer it is likely to make it into the Editor eventually but that's not a promise.
In Viewer, there is this tiny little bar with a small triangle inside right beside the bookmark pane.
I know what you mean - it is literally part of the bar that can be grabbed to resize the pane. I miss it to. Same answer as above and if we still don't see it when the rest of the Viewer features are added we'll start a campaign to get it added... ;-)

Regards the printer - I suggest for now you use the Viewer for printing. This is very likely specific to your Printer/driver combination and how the Editor is talking to it. Again - once the bulk of the work is done getting the full feature set into the Editor we will have an opportunity to dig into these more specific details.

Sub-pixel options? Not sure again - lets see what comes int he next few builds and take up then features/items that we want to push for.

hth

Hello pswolfwind,

I just tried to set my mouse wheel to "universal scroll" and it doesn't work for me either in the Editor, and works fine in the Viewer. (Having it set to zoom works properly though!) - so this needs our devs attention.

As for commenting on selected text - this is coming together with the other text input tools.

Best,
Stefan

Not sure if this one was mentioned before...
In Viewer, I can go to the previous view. This is very useful if I, for example, accidentally press End instead of Page Down button on the keyboard while in a scanned document. I can't find this option in Editor, which means I have to search manually where I last was. Will this feature be included in the next release?

Hi Filip013,

Thanks for the post - I've spoken to the Developers and they've confirmed that this should be included within the next build or 2.

Hope that helps!
