Is it possible to speed up page display performance?

Post by gate1975mlm »

Hello, :)

I really hate to bring this up because I really do think tracker software products makes the best PDF software with out all the bloatware like many other PDF readers have and I love the potential of PDF-Xchange Editor. However I have come across some PDF Magazines that for some reason displays each page several seconds slower in PDF-Xchange Editor compared to your competitors one being Foxit! Even a SSD drive makes no difference. Actually this seems to be an issue with PDF Magazines with photos. Just for example with this PDF file that I uploaded for you in PDF-Xchange Editor pages take like up to 2 or 3 seconds sometimes to load while the same pages take maybe a half a second to load in Foxit! and other PDF viewers. And again like I said it's not just this PDF but really almost all PDF Magazines with photos.

I really hope you can improve the page display speed in PDF-Xchange Editor to at least match the speed of Foxit!

Thanks

Hi Michael,

I do notice a slight difference, but nothing too significant on my machine. Could you please let us know on what hardware are you making the comparison?

Stefan

Well on one of my computers it has a Intel Core 2 Duo 6700 with 4GB of Ram and a SATA 7200RPM Hard Drive. And my notebook has a AMD Phenom II N950 Quad-Core with 8GB of Ram and a SSD Hard Drive.

I just really would like to see some page display speed improvements.

Hi Michael,

I've passed this thread on to the development team to consider. I, like Stefan, am not seeing the performance hit you are. Performance and speed are important to us and you can be sure that we will look into this in the future. Please have some patience here as it is certain that the current focus is on getting the Editor features complete, then we can look at tweaking performance.

If this were an issue we heard many users complaining of I suspect the priorities would change, however it appears that for most users the performance is pretty good.

hth

Hello,

I've just quickly compared Adobe Reader and PDF Editor, and the latter takes noticibly longer to display the pages of the magazine. I could do more testing if necessary.

Did you test with Foxit also?

I didn't but Stefan did. I think he saw more of a slow response to PDF-XChange Editor than I did.

Not sure what we can/will do before the final release however. Maybe the Dev Team leader will comment on here but he's pretty busy and I doubt that there will be further work done on the speed before adding the missing features...

That's cool I totally understand that getting most of if not all of the features done are what's important right now. But I do hope going forward Page display speed improvements will be near the top of the todo list :) Don't get me wrong I am not trying to say PDF-XChange Editor is slow as a turtle :) lol I just feel there is room for improvement. I just would love for the pages to load almost instantly or very close to that.

Yes, gate1975mlm: I've just tried your magazine on Foxit and the pages are displayed noticibly faster too.

Hopefully there'll be some speed gains too.

Personally, I can't wait for the annotation styles to be reintroduced and for the highlighting and other annotation tools to be available on PDF/A files. Should I keep my fingers crossed for the upcoming version? Thanks.

Hi vivadavid and gate1975mlm,

I didn't use any tools to measure the exact times, and this is just my own impression - but in my tests yesterday the Editor seemed faster than Adobe, and a bit slower than Foxit with the provided sample file. Editor was loading the pages in approximately 1/2 a second, but I must admit Foxit was faster. Adobe was handling the same pages with pretty much the same speed as the Editor. I have an SSD and a lot of RAM and CPU power though.

We will certainly take a further look into these speed issues as soon as possible, but as Paul already said most likely after the Editor's initial feature set is complete.

Stefan
