ActiveX SDK example code not working in FireFox

Post by Armin.Knopp »

Hello everybody,

we would like to use PDF-XChange Viewer ActiveX SDK to show and annotate documents on web pages in various browsers (IE, Chrome and Firefox).
However the ActiveX SDK example code (PDFXChangeViewer.html) seems to work in IE only.
Is there a way to get this working in other browsers too, without installing browser plugins or add-ons just by using HTML/JavaScript-Code like in the example ?!

Many thanks for your suggestions (and example code if possible).

Hi Armin,

I've just spoken with one of our devs and he told me that Chrome and FF do not support directly embedded ActiveX objects, and require a different type of plug in.

He also told me that for our own implementation we are using NPAPI:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPAPI
So please do take a look at it.

Stefan

Hello Stefan,
could you please describe in more details what has to be done.
We bought your ActiveX SDK to be able to deliver web applications to our customers.
Within our web application we want to display and manipulate pdf documents.
It would be best for us to do this using only HTML/JavaScript technique.
So again if there is any chance to do this that way, please let us know !

If this is not possible for Chrome and FF and a NPAPI-plugin is needed:

- Where do we get the necessary plugin from ?
- Is it contained in the ActiveX SDK that we bought already ?
- If not, can our customers intall it for free or how about licensing ?

Best regards,
Armin

Hi Armin,

I was not given details by my colleagues, but I believe that you will need to use the NPAPI to create your own custom plug-in which will wrap our AX.

You would be able to provide that wrapper for free, and then the standard licensing conditions for our Viewer AX apply.

Hello again Armin,

Here's the follow up comment from one of my colleagues from the dev team:
To allow manipulating pdf documents you will have to install our ActiveX, so it's not enough to just create a web page with ActiveX. If you want to create plugin for Firefox, you will also need to deliver your plugin and our ActiveX. And I don't think that editing PDF's on web page is a good idea - it will be hard to implement both version of plugin for IE and FF/Chrome browsers. Also you may only use IE for PDF editing.

Also Armin,

just a side note - you should be aware and note that you cannot make a PDF Viewer/Editor for general purpose use if this is a primary/significant feature of your application - essentially it must form part of a vertical market application for which this is just one of many features - i.e. a structured Document Management system that does not compete with our own end user/SDK offerings.

I would hate to see you invest copious amounts of time on any project only to find it cannot be marketed because it is in breach of our T's and C's - if you are in anyway unsure - please contact us and provide a description of what you wish to do and we will be pleased to provide further detail to allow you to make an informed judgement.
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Best regards
