Hi all,
When a PDF file is opened, the settings for the initial page display (default page zoom, default page layout) can be specified in the preferences.
The observation I have is that PDFs that are landscape are mostly presentation/slides while those that are portrait are documents. For a presentation, it makes more sense to have "Single-page" layout and "Fit Page" as the defaults. For documents, I prefer "Continuous" layout, and "Actual-size" for zoom. However the PDFs encountered are of both types, thus requiring adjusting the layout/zoom settings from the toolbar nearly for every PDF opened.
The proposal I have is to have separate initial page display settings for landscape and portrait PDF files. Then the user can specify the best settings for each, and would need to adjust these from the toolbar a lot less often.
Going a step further, ideal would be to change the zoom settings based on the median font-size within the PDF. But this may be less likely to work in practice.
Thanks

Re: Feature request: Initial page display settings separate
Hi alokgovil
thanks for the post and suggestions. I can certainly add a feature request and have the development team assess the practicality of such a feature.
One question it raises for me is what to do in the event of a mixed portrait/landscape PDF?

While I have encountered mixed portrait/landscape PDFs, they certainly are rare compared to pure portrait and pure landscape. The user productivity would be higher even if the software is unable to handle the mixed ones perfectly, if it can handle the pure portrait and landscape cases well. For example, it may simply use the first page to decide which initial page display settings to use. Of course, the software may again readjust as it does now as a user scrolls down to a page that is of different size.
A possibility also, though this is not what I would recommend, would be to use the settings for the page layout used by majority of the pages in the document. The reason why I do not recommend this is because the user does not immediately see this, and thus would find hard to learn the software behavior.

Re: Feature request: Initial page display settings separate
Thanks for the additional feedback.
I have made a formal feature request based on this forum thread. RT#2049: Feature request: Initial page display settings separate
While I cannot guarantee that this will be incorporated into the Editor (development of the Viewer has been stopped now) I can assure you this will be looked into and if deemed practical something will be done.
