Can't get iFilter to search inside pdf in win 7 x64 explorer

Post by Vrydag »

Hi,

I installed the free version of xchange pdf viewer, version 2.5.213.1
I made sure shellextensions was ticked while installing.
I get pdf thumbnail previews in explorer.
But when I search for text inside a pdf in explorer, it doesnt seem to search inside the pdf. Also tried adding a keyword to some pdf and tried searching for that, but that doesnt work either.

I added a folder with some test pdfs to windows indexing service (don't actually know if this is necessary, in any doc I found about this it wasn't mentioned).
When I search for the filename, it will show them immediately, but not on text inside them.
When I search using the pdf viewer client (full search pane): browse to the folder and then search on text or keyword it works (so I know I'm searching for something that actually exists)

Is there something I'm missing here?
Do I have a misconception about the iFilter concept?

Hello Vrydag,

I've asked one of my colleagues from the dev team for help with answering your questions and as soon as he gets back to me I will post here in the topic.

Regards,
Stefan

Thx,

Sry, but it seems it works (partially) now.

Though windows indexing said earlier it was done indexing, it didn't work. Now a few hours later I try again, and it finds stuff.

Still can't find a pdf on a keyword it seems though (which I need). It should be possible yes?

I'll try out some more stuff.

Btw thx for making a great product, been using the xchange veiwer for years now and I love it!

EDIT: ok tried some more stuff, and it also indexes the keywords now. Though only the file I added as test, not the file I used earlier. The windows index update seems to be not very dependable.

EDIT2: forced a rebuild of windows index, also removed some folders out of there so there wasn't too much to be indexed. And it now finds the original file on keyword, which it didnt before. So it seems completely solved.

HI Vrydag,

thanks for the updates. I'm pleased to hear that it is working for you. You are correct that we are limited here by what the Windows search is reporting.

Do let us know if you need further assistance.
Best regards
