Why upgrading from version 2.5 Build 214.2 to version 2.5 Build 308.0 a new serial number is required?

Thanks for the post - we've moved to a new protection sub-system and serial key format. To get a 'new-style' key requires that user's have valid product maintenance in place. Please see here for more details on properly upgrading:

How do I purchase product maintenance?
In "My Account" -> "Upgrade Options" I can only make this update:

PDF-XChange Editor v.5.5.308.0 Single User License
From PDF-XChange Viewer Single User License (PVP20-XXXX-XXXXX-XXXX-........)

I don't want to purchase "PDF-XChange Editor", but only the maintenance for "PDF-XChange Viewer PRO"

From what I can see, your maintenance expired in 2010, so you'll need to email sales@pdf-xchange.com to reinstate your maintenance.

We use the evaluation version in our office and I automate the updates for each of the computers by using a silent installer. Your current upgrade causes this to break because of the new license information needed. Is there a way to detect the PDFXViewer is in evaluation mode, and avoid the Activation Promps and Windows?

No - I regret there is not - though on a positive note possibly - as the Viewer is likely not be updated more than once more before all development ceases in favour of our other products - assuming you do not convert to the replacement for the Viewer (PDF-XChange Editor) this is not an issue you are likely to face more than once or possibly twice again.

well we have issued copious bulletins here, by email and on our web site - the PDF-XChange Editor is the replacement and still offers around 85% of its features for use free and without a license - preserving the balance of functionality for Licensed users and available in the FREE version as trial features only - similar in method to the way the Viewer behaved.

1. Does the Editor also have a silent installer option?
2. Give or take, when will the Viewer no longer be updated?

1) Absolutely - unfortunately, the online documentation is unavailable at this time, but if you advise on the commands that you're looking for, I can provide the switches.

2) Technically, the Viewer is no longer supported, so it should just be assumed that no further updates will take place and that any that do are just a 'nice bonus'. We are still fixing some critical issues, but this is because there still Developers using the Viewer SDK's. Once we've released the Editor SDK, any and all updates to the Viewer will cease completely.

This is what I am using currently:


PDFXVwer.exe /VERYSILENT /NORESTART /NOINSTASK /PDFV

Basically I would like it to install completely quiet, do not restart, do not install any other software, only set PDFX as the default viewer if nothing else is installed. But it sure would be nice to know what other options are there as there might be other things I want to do if I know the options exist.

Why? I've purchased it because I need a portable software!!
I've seen that Editor isn't available as portable.

The Viewer is supported - its a bad choice of words - but further development is severely curtailed and will shortly cease, all users with active/vaild maintenance get a free upgrade to the Editor which is its replacement.

With regards a portable version we will endeavour to have this complete and ready if at all possible in the next build 309...

The installation switches for the Editor EXE are as follows:

EXE Specific

/passive | /quiet -  displays minimal UI with no prompts or displays no UI and
   no prompts. By default UI and all prompts are displayed.

/norestart   - suppress any attempts to restart. By default UI will prompt before restart.
/log log.txt - logs to a specific file. By default a log file is created in %TEMP%

The EXE can be a little restricting, from the Command Line. If you'd like a little more flexibility, I'd suggest using the MSI and I can then send the switches for that.

Umberto -we're going to try and get the Editor's portable Version ready for 309, but it's a fairly big job and some changes are being made to the way that this will work, so it's more likely to be ready for build 310.
