[bug] Tab switching is really messed up.

Post by avada »

Hello!
Ctrl+shift+tab switching beetween tabs has bugs. If I use this to switch between tabs two bugs happen with the latest couple versions.
1. If I do it slowly PDFX changes back to the original one when I lift up my fingers from ctr+shift at the end of it. (Technically you have depress shift first, but that's how it always happens if you press all of the keys with your left hand.)
2. If I switch and quickly lift my fingers, it not only doesn't switch left, but switches two to the right...
Apparently plain ctrl+tab works properly.

I kept downgrading, 2.5.213 is the oldest I have. 1. is not present in this but 2. happens just as well.

Hello avada,

Thanks for your report.
We should not have changed this for the Viewer from build 213 to the current latest, but can you please try the Viewer's successor - the PDF XChange Editor and see if it behaves better?

I don't like that, it's bloated. The installer is that ridiculously dated with the crappy file selector. (Also it apparently failed at creating a start menu folder)
I also get this giant toolbar instead of the old compact one. Also it seems to lack features that the old one has. Like rendering and GUI customization. (At first glance)

Anyway. Got down to v2.5.201, but issue 2. remained so it's a really old bug. I hope it gets fixed even though the focus is now on never/weaker product.

(I'm on win 8.1, maybe it's relevant)

Hello avada,

If the Editor installer didn't create a start menu for you - then maybe you unchecked that option?
It's been working properly for hundreds of thousands of other installations.
And when you say "dated" - isn't it better for an installer to work than look shiny?

UI Customization and Rendering menu entries are coming in future Editor builds.

For the Viewer: You say that Ctrl-Shift-Tab goes two documents to the right instead one to the left - how many do you have opened for your tests? Could it be that going one back is equivalent to going 2 forward (e.g. if you only have 3 documents opened for the test?)

I tried with opening like seven to be sure. It jumps two to the right. (In case I do it quickly of course)

("And when you say "dated" - isn't it better for an installer to work than look shiny?"
Well the old one was simply better. More efficient and offered more options. (languages) But whatever, the editor doesn't matter to me.)

Hello Avada,

Thank you for the post,

Ctrl+Shift+Tab seems to work fine in the latest Viewer (308.2) So does Ctrl+Tab. Please update to the latest build of the Viewer using the installer below:

https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFXVwer.zip

Note that this will be the final build of the Viewer as development has stopped and focus turned to the Editor.

Note: You will need to upgrade your license to activate this final version of the viewer, please try it out before you chose to purchase the upgrade. More information about upgrade options can be found here: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowledgebase/435

I hope this helps!
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Cheers,

What? I don't understand this was the exact version I noticed the bug with.

"Ctrl+Spam message posted by BOT engine - ignore - to be deleted by admin+Tab seems to work fine in the latest Viewer (308.2) So does Ctrl+Tab."

I can't understand this sentence at all. ctrl+spam? BOT engine? admin+tab?

Hello avada,

Sorry about that. In my previous post I had typed shift without the F. causing the spam filter to sensor me.

As for your issue, I was not able to replicate it. I will speak to my colleagues and see if they had better luck.

We will post back here as soon as we have something further to report.

Ehhh... Another bug the only happens to me... Anyway I tried with default settings by deleting Settings.dat and it happened just the same: If pressing Ctrl+shift+tab slowly it jumps back to the original if pressing fast jumps two to the right.

My best guess that it has something to do with the OS version, if you're not using the same. (8.1 x64)

PS: maybe the spambot massage could be formatted distinctly. Because this way it really got confusing.

Hi Avada,

Do you think you can make a short video illustrating the problem with e.g. captions telling us which keys are being pressed at the time you are taking the video? It will be easier for us to get a full understanding of the problem this way.

I just spent like 3 minutes pressing Ctrl, Shift and Tab in any combination I thought is plausible to be executed with one hand, and still could not reproduce this.
Can you please tell us what is the exact order in which you press the keys?
I myself press Ctrl with the little finger, Shift with the ring finger, and then once both those are pressed I hit the Tab key with the middle finger.
When using just Ctrk - Tab I tend to use the thumb and index fingers instead.

Stefan

I find it most convenient to pres ctrl(+shift) with left thumb and tab with index finger.

I was thinking of making a video with windows' virtual keybord on top. But it doesn't show which shift/ctrl is pressed and doesn't show tab at all. (If there were an virtual keyboard that showed exactly what is pressed I could make a useful video)

Anyway...
The first one is easy to describe: press down ctrl+shift then tap tab. The tab switches to the left one. Unpress shift only and the viewer erroneously changes back to the original one.

The second one I can't tell myself because I just do it too quickly. But I basicall press ctrl+shift together and tab very quickly after that. (Of cours I use the same thumb+index finger combination)

Hello Avada,

Thanks for the follow up.
I did try, but it's rather impossible for me if using just the thumb for Ctrl and Shift to release the Shift before the Tab. And even if I manage to do that (I had to use both hands to achieve this result) - then the Editor thinks that I have pressed Ctrl-Tab only - and starts scrolling through my opened files forward, so maybe that's why you are observing strange behaviour. Please try releasing tab before the Shift and all will work properly.

Well if you're trying with the editor you won't find the bug in the viewer... :)

Hard to believe since that's how it's natural if you keep your hands on the desk.

It surely won't. I use these hotkey with many apps to switch tabs and all work properly besides this one. Plus I release tab before shift, otherwise I'd switch to the right with all apps...

(BTW this bug doesn't seem to be present in the editor)

As I stated previously, The Editor has replaced the Viewer as the next major build, with active development and bug fixes. Given that the Viewer is no longer under development, it is extremely unlikely that a fix will ever be released in the Viewer.

If you are unhappy with the final build of the Viewer, the only thing I can recommend is updating to the Editor:

Sorry for the inconvenience

Well, maybe some shortcut handling is not a big deal to fix. One can hope.
For now I'll probably stick with viewer. The editor seems to be missing some configurability/features, but I'll check it out. Maybe check out never versions, to see how it changes. (For example I couldn't find full screen mode, or rendering settings)

Hi Avada,

If you find that the Viewer is more suited to your needs, then you are certainly more than welcome to continue using it :)
