How to view and edit two instances of same document?

Post by kplatou »

Does pdf xchange viewer have a similar function to the adobe reader's (and Excel's) "New window"-function, i.e viewing two instances of the same document side by side, while being able to edit the document at the same time?

Opening the same document twice solves the viewing issue, but without being able to edit in the instances i might as well just use adobe reader. Changes made in one instance are not being accounted for in the other, as it will be in adobe reader and excel's "new window"-function.

Hi kplatou,

Thanks for the post and welcome to the forums - you should be able to do this by going to Edit --> Preferences --> General and enabling Multiple Instances. However, do be aware that changes made to one instance will need to be saved before they will be display in the other instance.

If you need an automatic, as-you-go kind of update, then you will likely be better of using the Editor's split view (Window --> Split). The Editor is the replacement for the Viewer and can be downloaded here:

Hope that helps!

I am aware of the split function, but I don't think it is nearly as good as the "new window" function, where you could basically open as many windows of the same document as you like and edit the document simultaneously. This goes especially for working with large pdfs, for example listed companies' annual reports and so forth.

I strongly believe this function would be a great timesaver for a lot of people using both PDF Xchange and Editor. Is there any chance you could look into adding this to the applications?

Hi kplatou,

I can't currently confirm this, as I'll need to speak with the Dev. Team, but I'm not sure that this is actually possible. I believe that once changes are made to a document, a temporary copy is either stored in memory, or that a temp. file is created within the Windows %temp% directory. If a temp file, then the file name is unique and, to a degree, random - at least enough that it will be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to run any kind of a check for the file name to then copy of the data. If it's stored in memory, then this complicates things more.

Once again I will need to confirm that and if I'm wrong, will certainly place the request for this. However, I'm fairly confident that this is why the Split View was 'invented'.

Cheers,

Hi again Will,

Thank you for swift responses. Whether this is actually practically possible with the current PDF xchange/Editor applications, I have no idea, obviously. But here is what I found out about the Excel new window function, after having read your response:

I opened a blank excel document and used the new window function. Then I had two instances of the same document, and sheet, open. Then I tiled these windows vertically, making the same sheet showing "twice" on the screen. When I typed in one of the instances, the text appeared simultaneously on the other instance.

Whether this function uses any temporary files, I don't know, but I doubt it. Could you please keep this in mind when consulting with the Dev. team?

Cheers,
