Keyboard shortcuts
Hi there, I try to use your product to comment on some material from school and I get a lot of mathematical stuff. Especially things with super- and subscripts.
Adding a new sticky comment lets me change the formatting within to superscript/subscript just fine. Well, at least if I intend to end the text right there. Because I don't see any option to set the formatting to default again, and if there was a possibility to do so as there is in the PDF Editor product (by the means of the toolbar), I'd rather do it with a shortcut again so that I would not have to leave the keyboard.
I can't figure out for the life of me why that is. If I create a comment with PDF viewer, I can use CTRL + SHIFT + "NUMPAD +" to make it print text in superscript. CTRL + SHIFT + "NUMPAD -" then subscripts the following text in relation to this superscript, not to the original text formatting. There is no way to make it print something like 10 raised to the second power in base 10, for example.
I don't know about the internals of the PDF format and am thus not aware of any limitations, but I figured since I can get subscript in the comments, and superscript in the comments, plus get a superscript of a subscript and vice versa, there should be a method to get a superscript on the baseline next to a subscript next to the baseline and vice versa. Or even a baseline after a sub-/ superscript, which is not possible atm, or maybe I'm just too damn stupid for it. Help is appreciated in either way;).
I can live with hardcoded keyboard shortcuts if they are not to demanding and make at least some sense, but not being able to get the desired result at all, may it be from shortcuts, toolbar buttons or even a menu entry is kind of strange. Some sort of entry in the preferences to assign keyboard shortcuts to whatever would certainly add a lot of value to your product line.
Thanks for your time and best regards

Re: Keyboard shortcuts
Hello chatumao,
You could try to assign a shortcut to e.g. "Apply default text formatting" and this should return you to the normal base line text input. Please note that the Viewer is the older of our 2 viewing products and has now be superseded by the PDF-XChange Editor in terms of 'Active' development, so consider going to the Editor, where you can toggle the super/sub script mode, and you can also assign custom shortcuts to them in the Editor if you want.
Regards,
Stefan

Re: Keyboard shortcuts
Hi chatumao,
Thanks for the post - I'd like to make sure I'm understanding this right because, if I am, you've posed a dilemma that I don't think we've ever thought of before. Are you looking to have i.e. a superscript of a superscript, or a subscript of a subscript or, to take that one step further, a subscript of a superscript? (See screen-shot): If this is along the lines of what you're referring too, then I will have a word with the Dev. Team to see if this is possible.
Cheers,

Re: Keyboard shortcuts
Wow... Didn't expect such replies!
First of all, I figured the out the main dilemma - getting back to my baseline. Works like a charm with the Editor, first shied away because there was no pre-configured hotkey for the superscripts and I started to believe that this was again one of those "updates" with old features missing. But it isn't and I know found my way around the hotkey editor, which is very nice as well.
I think this is all very solid, the things that really nagged me were the (not) missing of the shortcut editor, which seemed to emerge from my own lack of research to be quite honest (I looked in the settings were it is located in other programs) and the inability to reset to baseline which is now solved as well.
Implementing things like superscripts over superscripts etc would certainly be nice, more features are always welcome! If your devs get around to that, that is. Other than that I noticed that I cannot put a special character like a British pound sign into a superscript which doesn't make too much sense anyway, but there are special characters were it does.
Well, thanks for your time and attention and most of all thanks for supplying us with such a great tool, best PDF reader out there if you ask me!
Best regards!

Re: Keyboard shortcuts
Hi chatumao,
Great, glad that you've got what you needed
Regarding the special characters, could you give an example of where you might use one in a super/subscript? I ask because I'd like a working example of where this might be relevant to show the Dev. Team.
I'll definitely have the conversation about the superscript over superscript, etc. as soon as I'm able.
Cheers,

Had to turn quite some pages before I actually found one, but they seem to exist.

Re: Keyboard shortcuts
Hello chatumao,
Please check the attached file - no problems with the special characters in a super/sub script for me when using the Editor.
I am using a UK keyboard so I enter the £ symbol from the keyboard directly but all the umlauts and the EUR sign I am entering using e.g. Alt + 0128 for €.
Regards,
Stefan

Re: Keyboard shortcuts
I can confirm that. I used the windows character map and copy pasted, this approach is unsuccessful. Using a different character map program allows me to copy paste specials into super/subscripts, direct input is also possible. Thanks for the pointer!
