FLST aka Tab Flipping

Post by David.P »

Hi forum and Tracker team,

today I'd like to repeat one of my feature requests of 2008:
David.P wrote:A second click on a tab could bring back the previously active tab
(like the FLST extension for Firefox)
This would be incredibly handy if you have more than two Tabs open, and you want to quickly switch back and forth between exactly two of the open Tabs/documents, for example for quick visual comparison.

At the moment, in order to switch back and forth between exactly two (out of many) Tabs, you need to move the mouse every time before clicking, which is tedious and distracting.

Thank you already for consideration!

I do not know if it can already help, but if you have opened (only) two documents, you can quickly switch between them by using the keycombination CTRL + TAB (go forwards).

SHIFT + CTRL + TAB to go backwards, if you have multiple files open.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the posts!

I like the sound of that and can definitely see the value in it. Personally, I think it would be better and more convenient to have this a keyboard shortcut, would you agree?

Thanks Willy, I am aware of what you are proposing (and use it all the time for "Blink Comparison" of exactly two open documents).

However, this does not work when you have more than two documents open, and you need to compare exactly two out of them.

Will, thank you for the resonance! While having a keyboard shortcut for this would be just as useful, Tab flipping by clicking on a tab (a second time) would be very intuitive, and also would not interfere with anything else.

But I'm ok with any of the two variants (i.e. keyboard shortcut or second mouse click).

Keep up the great work,
Best Regards
David

Hi David,

I suspect that we could do both, to be honest. I'll pass it along to the Dev. Team and will see if they're as 'into' the feature as I am ;)

Cheers,

So ..., still another proposal.

Why not use the already existing keycombination ALT + LEFT (Navigate Backward) and ALT + RIGHT (Navigate Forward).
Both navigation buttons are also represented by an icon at the bottom of PDF-XChange Editors' window.

It not only works for switching between the two last positions in one document, but also in two last documents.

You can keep pressing the ALT-key (with one finger of the left hand) and rapidly switch positions by using two fingers of the right hand on the two cursor-keys.

Hi Willy,

That's great for now, but I don't personally think that it invalidates David's point - this is contextual, so if you have just switched between two pages in the same document, is switches between the two last viewed spots in a document. You then have to click between the two different documents, to be able to compare them in this manner and can no longer also do the page comparison.

The point of the feature that I like so much, is that if you have to compare pages 1 and 5 in Doc. A and page 32 and 76 in Doc. B, you can do all of that with the keyboard. I know that I would use this many, many times a day for comparing user's documents.

Guys,

Willy's proposal is actually a very good workaround which for my purpose will do for the time being -- until dedicated tab flipping as described in even more detail by Will possibly is available.

Glad to hear it :)

I'll pitch the idea to the Dev. Team as soon as I'm able.
