Make Quick Access Toolbar the same in Classic and Ribbon User Interface

Post by David.P »

Hello Forum and Tracker Support Team,

the Quick Access Toolbar (the toolbar in the window title bar) is available both in the Ribbon User Interface (below left) and in the Classic User Interface (below right) of PDF-XChange Editor.

However, it seems that there are two independent versions of the Quick Access Toolbar, one in the Ribbon User Interface and another one in the Classic User Interface.

I would like to use the same (heavily customized) Quick Access Toolbar in the Classic User Interface and in the Ribbon User Interface:

Is this possible? If it should not be possible, I'd like to suggest that the same Quick Access Toolbar is used in both User Interfaces, as a feature request.

The same applies to the "Other Tools" button. I have also customized this button significantly, and would like to use the same customized "Other Tools" button both in the Classic User Interface and in the Ribbon User Interface:

Thank you
David

Hi David,

I see the same behaviour, I can set up a completely different set of tools on the Quick Access Toolbar for each classic and ribbon UI.

I am not sure if this is a feature of a bug, I'll get the devs feedback on this.

Thank you Paul for your quick reply, and for making the inquiry with the Development team.

I have now tried to work around this issue by creating a duplicate of my customized "Other Tools" button on a temporary new toolbar in the classic UI, in order to then drag the commands of this duplicate of the "Other Tools" button on that temporary toolbar over to my "Other Tools" button in the Ribbon UI one by one:

Image

Unfortunately, this doesn't work either, as the temporary new toolbar that I created is also only available in the Classic UI, but not in the Ribbon UI.

The same seems to apply to all other toolbars that are available in both user interfaces, such as for example, the new Quick Tools Toolbar. There, changes to e.g. the Quick Tools Toolbar in one UI are not reflected to the Quick Tools Toolbar in the other UI either.

This is also the case, for example, with the toolbars in the Thumbnails Pane and in the Bookmarks Pane. Changes to these toolbars in one user interface are unfortunately also not reflected in the other user interface.

In other words, there is currently no possibility to synchronize, and not even to transfer or copy, customized toolbars or buttons (like the "Other Tools" button) between the two user interfaces.

Therefore, I'd like to emphasize again that in my view, it would be very beneficial if toolbars and buttons (such as the "Other Tools" button) that exist in both user interfaces would be synchronized across both user interfaces. This would save duplicate work when customizing both user interfaces.

Thanks again
Best regards
David

Thanks for the added explanation David.

So I am told it is expected behaviour:
Classic and Ribbon are completely different and don't share toolbars, even for toolbars with the same name.
The question this raises is "Do you frequently switch between the two user interfaces?" Our expectation is that users would tend to use one or the other, this level of consistency between the two was never planned.

O.k. thanks Paul for the feedback from the Devs.

My use case would have been to introduce colleagues to a version of PDF-XChange Editor that I have heavily customized.

Since the colleagues are novices and still work with the standard Ribbon UI, I would show them how to quickly switch between their Ribbon UI and the customized Classic UI.

However, the contents of the Quick Access Toolbar and of some other toolbars, notably the Thumbnails and Bookmarks Toolbars which also are customized, should be identical in both UI versions, in order to facilitate the transition from the Ribbon to the Classic User Interface.

I guess I'll have to live with this not being possible for now, as this feature request is probably rare.

Instead, I shall manually customize the corresponding toolbars, so that they are identical in both user interfaces.

Best regards
