Set scale for document so rulers and comments match scale

Post by hkeiner »

Hi,

I am trying to create a drawing with a 1" to 12" scale and have the ruler and drawn objects' properties (e.g. lines and squares on Comment ribbon) show the "scaled" dimensions instead of the "printed page" dimensions. For example, on a letter size (8-1/2 x11) printed document I want the ruler to show the long side of the page as the 132" (11" side x12 scale) instead of the printed page size of 11 inches. How do I do that?

Hi hkeiner,

I asked the dev team about this and they agreed. It isn't a high priority item, so I cannot tell you when it will happen, but it is formally accepted not and in the system. There is an associated ticket for this mow, and while for internal use only, should you refer to #6397: Feature Request :: Editor :: Set scale for document so rulers and comments match scale here then any support staff member should be able to get you a status report.

I hope that helps.
Best regards

Thanks for the definitive reply that it is not possible to do that currently. Now I can stop spending so much time scouring the online manual , scouring the FAQs, scouring the Preferences options, and scouring the Document Properties options trying to figure it out. LOL

I would add that it is surprising that it is not considered a much higher priority to implement, as it would make constructing drawings to scale so much easier.

Hello, hkeiner

Ruler scales are a finnicky topic, because they are linked intrinsically to every facet of how the actual page content/calculations are performed/displayed and thus have ties into countless other features. Becuase of this, any changes to how that information is displayed is a massive undertaking.
Factoring in the very small amount of demand for such a function, the resources and strain on our small team to implement and maintain such a feature, and the time it would take away from other much more highly demanded functions, it was assigned a low priority.

If we are lucky, it may appear in the future, but it is likely going to be a side project that gets slowly chipped away at, not a primary development focus, at least until we see overwhelming demand for it.

Thanks for the added explanation. I understand that sometimes what seems like a simple request to add/change something from a user's point of view may often involve a lot of complicated programing and other restrictions behind the scenes. I have delt with that often in the past when developing and modifying Access databases for users in a business environment. Anyway, I think you all do a great job implementing and supporting your product and thanks for taking the time to respond to my post. :D
