Bookmark window not tracking scrolling/jumping

Post by n0d9McNt01XWHaX0K0bv »

Hi,
Foo.pdf
When scrolling through a document (or jumping around using the search function) The bookmarks section does not keep track of where the view is when the bookmarks are collapsed.

Version: 9.5 b366

Steps to reproduce:
1) Make sure all bookmarks are collapsed
2) Scroll onto p4
3) Expand chapter "bar" in the bookmarks section. The highlight remains on bar instead of going down a level onto test2. If the bookmarks section kept track even for collapsed sub-chapters that would be especially helpful in documents with hundreds/thousands of pages with Bookmarks 3 or 4 levels deep. On those documents it's not really an option to simply expand all.

Hello n0d9McNt01XWHaX0K0bv and Dimitar,

I assume that you have already set this up, but the following settings must be enabled in the Bookmarks pane options.

  • Ensure Visibility of Corresponding Bookmark
  • Automatically Expand Bookmarks
These settings seem to be valid only when an area other than the Bookmarks pane, for example the document view, is active. That is, immediately after expanding a particular bookmark item as you have pointed out, the Bookmarks pane should be active, but as long as the Bookmarks pane is active, the bookmark item corresponding to the page is not automatically expanded even if the page is scrolled with the mouse wheel, etc.

Also, even if the document view is active, bookmark items corresponding to the page while scrolling will not be expanded if you scroll continuously with the shortcut keys or the scroll buttons at both ends of the scroll bar pressed. Only when you scroll the page with the mouse wheel, all bookmarks corresponding to the page while scrolling are automatically expanded.

Since these are not specifically mentioned in the manual, I do not know if these are a behavior intended by the programmer or a bug. However, I imagine that the programmer intended these behavior, since there are cases where it is more convenient not to automatically expand bookmark items when editing them while scolling pages, etc.

A verification video is attached for your reference.

  • CapturedVideo.zip
In the first half of the video, the Bookmarks pane is active, and in the second half, the document view is active and the page is scrolled with the mouse wheel. Only when the document view is active, shown in the second half of the video, the bookmarks are automatically expanded.

I am sorry if I understood something wrong.

Best regards,
rakunavi

I think that's a slightly different case.

I have these deliberately disabled. If I have those enabled the bookmark bar becomes unusable pretty quickly. Currently working with a document with 2743 pages and 3131 bookmarks. So after scrolling for a bit it's not really possible to find things anymore.

The request I have is only for the highlight box to appear around the corresponding bookmark when it becomes visible, not for the bookmark to automatically become visible.

Hi n0d9McNt01XWHaX0K0bv,

Thanks to the sample file, I finally understand what you mean. I am ashamed to say that my comment was completely off the mark.
May your request reach Tracker.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello, rakunavi

I think you may have been correct on that Rakunavi, Simply configuring the options as you said, and then opening the file anew, it seems to work exactly as desired in build 366.0, see my attached Gif where I follow The steps to reproduce from the very first post.
It is worth noting that there are two different highlights in the bookmarks pane. One is the "selection highlight" which is more prominent and shows the last bookmark you selected, even after scrolling away. The other is the viewing highlight, which is effectively just a lightly border/box around the bookmark you are closest to.

This little bit right here seems to be the cause of the issue. You have disabled both options, because the "auto-expand" feature was causing problems. If both are disabled, it is expected that no highlighting occurs. To get what you are looking for here, you will want to enable only the "ensure visibility" option, and not the auto-expand option:
