When using with Mouse without Borders, the image may not disappear after cutting an image larger than a certain size

Hello all,

When an image is selected and cut with content editing mode enabled, the image disappears from the document as soon as it is copied to the clipboard. However, when running with Microsoft Garage Mouse without Borders, the image might not disappear after cutting a content image larger than a certain size.

For example, a 6000 pixel x 3000 pixel image will disappear after cutting, but a 6000 pixel x 4000 pixel image will not disappear after cutting. The number of colors doesn't seem to have anything to do with the issue. Running Mouse without Borders doesn't guarantee that the issue will occur in any environment, but if it does occur due to some combination of conditions, the issue can be avoided by terminating Mouse without Borders.

I have confirmed that the same issue occurs on two different machines, an real machine with Windows 10 and a virtual machine with Windows 10 on VMware. However, the issue doesn't occur on a PC with Windows 11 even when Mouse without Borders is running. Due to the insufficient number of machines tested, I couldn't say whether the OS type has anything to do with it.

Even if the image doesn't disappear after the cut, I can delete it with the Delete key, so it's a trivial matter. I think it is probably a bug of Mouse without Borders, but since there are many users of Mouse without Borders, so I report it as a tip for your reference.

A verification video is attached for your reference. After showing in the first half of the video that the image can be cut successfully, the second half starts Mouse without Borders and shows that the image does not disappear after the cut. The screen is blacked out in the middle of the video because the UAC dialog that appears when Mouse without Borders is launched cannot be captured.

Thank you for the patience, this one took a little extra investigation to get to the bottom of. It seems that the issue here is caused by the Mouse Without Borders application "freezing" the clipboard while it processes the new information. This would also tie into why it doesn't happen while disabled, and is somewhat inconsistent in when it does not work even while enabled.

In short, When we copy content, we copy a number of items to the clipboard, and a "cut" operation is only "successful" if all of that content can be copied. If any single item is not copied properly to the clipboard, the cut "failed", and as such, our Editor refuses to remove the selection, in case you wish to try cutting it again. This is a fairly conventional system of handling cut operations across many apps.
What we are seeing in the mouse without borders app, is that during the "cut" operation, it takes each item as a separate "copy" action, and so it receives item A, locks the clipboard, shares it to all the other PC's then unlocked the clipboard, to accept item B. Wash, rinse repeat, and you have a full set of clipboard data which can be pasted on any of your up to 4 devices.
The short "lock" while sharing is the issue here. When you copy larger content, especially large sections of images, the data that needs to be shared is larger, and so it takes longer to propagate. When there is a delay, the clipboard remains locked long enough between operations that the editor thinks the copy failed, and so the "cut" does not delete the content anymore.

We will be looking into this and seeing if there are ways to optimize the process so that it is less prone to these errors, without delaying the copy process. I cannot promise a resolution, but at least we now know why the issue is present.

Thank you for taking the time to look into this in detail.

I am relieved that this is not an issue that occurs only at my PCs. The CPU on the PC where the issue occurs is a Core i5-4590, so it is a slow machine today. Nevertheless, the issue does not occur with other software such as Microsoft Paint or GIMP, so there might be some room for improvement even on the PDF-XCE side.

It is indeed being looked into, and the ticket for your reference is RT#6410: Bug? Editor fails to "cut" large content while "mouse without borders" is in use.
