Images copied/saved from PDF-Xchange are blurry and are scaled/cropped

Post by MajoraZ »

in PDF-Xchange, when selecting an image and copying it to another program (such as image editing software), or when using the "Image tools > Format > Save" function, the resulting image will be blurry, as well as very slightly cropped/as if the image were shifted slightly; compared to if you copy an image in other PDF software.
Here is a example:

The left has the original image file I have on my computer. I inserted this into a PDF, and then opened that PDF in PDF-XCHANGE and copied it and pasted it (middle) into my image editing program, and then did the same with opening the PDF in another product, and copy and pasting it (right)

At fullsize, it's not super visually obvious, but when zoomed in, the difference is pretty noticeable:

NOTE THIS IS AN ANIMATED GIF, YOU MUST CLICK THE IMAGE TO SEE IT ANIMATE
PDF IMAGE EXTRACTION COMPARSION ANIMATED 2.gif
It may look like I did not select the exact same part of the image here with each example in the GIF, but I 100% did: It is just that in PDF-xchange, the image looks slightly skewed when looking at certain portions of the image (more on why I think this is below). Also, while in the GIF there are slight differences between the "original" and "another product" examples, that is merely from the gif compression/reduced color depth: The actual copied image from the other product, was identical to the original image file in my image editor prior to exporting it as a gif. The PNG file above should show that.

While I have not comprehensively tested this with dozens of different PDF's, so far it has happened with all 4-5 PDF's i've tested, including ones I have made myself. Again, to be clear, images from the *same* PDF will be lower quality when copied in PDF-XChange then other PDF software: This is a problem with PDF-Xchange, not the PDF files the image is being copied from.

I believe the images are being scaled in the process of being copied: The top left area of the image is almost identical when copied from either software, as if the image was being stretched from the top left, and this would also explain the blurring (from being stretched) and why either (depending on the image) the bottom edge or the right edge of the image is cropped out when copied from PDF-Exchange: The image was stretched/scaled, but without a modified resolution, so part of the original image is now just missing.

-----

If this is an intended part of the software and can be disabled, please let me know. If this is a bug, I hope it can be fixed ASAP: This is an absolute dealbreaker for me (I 100% need a loseless way to copy/extract images from PDF's I am reading) and while I've used PDF-Xchange and previous versions of the software for many, many years now, I'll have to switch to a different program until this is fixed.

Hello MajoraZ,

Do you get similar result when you save the image from the contents pane:

When an image is embedded inside a file - it could be stripped of the original file format, and could be recompressed, and when exporting it back - we will need to recompress that back to the file format you select to save that image in which might have a softening effect on the image indeed. I am not sure how Adobe are getting a better result - so can you please share with us the original image in it's image source file format, as well as the PDF you've created, and the results of your tests?

Kind regards,
Stefan
