Bug: Mark for Redaction Not Displaying Outline of Area to Redact When Selecting Content

Post by mCHSNUg5Pz8cPap »

I've encountered a problem with the Mark for Redaction feature. I use this to select areas to redact by clicking the left mouse button, dragging a selection over the area to redact, and releasing the left mouse button. The problem is that when I use the mouse to select the area to redact there is no outline of the box to indicate what I'm selecting. I made a gif illustrating the problem

Hello, mCHSNUg5Pz8cPap

Thank you for the report, This would be because you have defined "none" as the stroke color for the redaction tool. The stroke color is only used for the appearance of the floating "preview area" for redaction and is not present in the final redacted content. the only color that matter when clicking "apply redaction" is the "redaction color".
If you wish to retain the preview, you will want to assign a "stroke color" to your redaction tool:

I think maybe I didn't explain the problem very well. What I'm referring to is the dynamic box that should appear when I am in the process of selecting the area to redact—i.e., when I push the left mouse button, drag the mouse to a new location while holding the left mouse button, and then release the left mouse button. When I push the mouse button and move the mouse, it should show a selection box whose size changes as I move the mouse so that I can see what is being selected.

For example, go to the second video in this post by rakunavi: viewtopic.php?p=175135#p175135

It shows how it should work. When the mouse button is pressed and the mouse moved, it displays a box whose size changes until the mouse button is released.

In contrast, in the video I posted above, nothing is displayed until I release the mouse button, which is when the box just appears as if by magic. Just to be clear, there is no problem after I release the mouse button and the redaction box appears. Everything works after that. The problem occurs during the process of selecting the area to be redacted with the mouse.

I hope that makes sense. The problem occurs regardless of whether the fill color for the redaction is set to none or a color.

Edit to add: watch the video in the first post and notice the part where my cursor moves across the text "Welcome to Smallpdf." This is the part of the video where I was holding the mouse button to select the text. Notice how there is nothing to indicate what content I am selecting while I hold down the mouse button. After I move the mouse across the text, the redaction box just appears out of thin air. This is the point at which I released the mouse button.

Hello, mCHSNUg5Pz8cPap

I did watch your animation in full, and did also carefully read what you said, and was indeed able to reproduce the issue. Please review my previous post, as I did not say to change the fill color, but the "stroke" color.

I have attached another Gif showing the same more clearly below:
PDFXEdit_ewXAWtU169.gif
Note that any comment item will draw its preview using the input settings. If you create a rectangle comment with a "white" stroke color, it is similarly not visible on a white background page during the drag operation. You can do the same with a "line" or "pen" comment as well, and will not be able to see these item until drawing is complete, or a background is in place. Since the Redact comment allows for "none" to be set, it will also not be visible even if a background is present, since a color selection of "none" translates to "fully transparent".

Kind regards,
