A collection of small feature requests

Post by David.P »

Hi forum and Tracker team,

below pls. find a couple of feature ideas I came across while having used PDF-XChange Viewer Pro for some months now.
  • Extended Search Button should TOGGLE the extended search pane, not only switch it ON, like at present
  • Extended search pane, when activated, should inherit the contents of the normal search box
  • Text Highlighter with actual note text inside needs to signalize that it actually has content, and a tooltip should display the highlighter note's content
  • Support undo after creation of text highlights to prevent having to select-and-delete the unwanted highlight
  • A second click on a tab could bring back the previously active tab (like e.g. the FLST extension for Firefox)
  • Clicking on the "Page Width" zoom button should actually zoom to the width of the *currently displayed* page, not to the with of the widest page of the current document, even when in "continuous pages" view mode. This is one of the annoyances of Adobe Acrobat that should not be inherited by XChange Viewer.
  • Make the "X" button of the left pane close the pane, not only the current view of the pane, in order to be able to turn off e.g. thumbnail or bookmark view faster without having to close every single content of the pane by itself, and having to re-open all different contents of the left pane afterwards again.
  • Killer Feature for documents with lots of bookmarks: Add a 'reduce list to match as you type' feature. You can find a similar feature in the about:config window or above the history sidebar in Firefox, and it is amazingly efficient.

For example, I have legal texts with hundreds of pages and possibly with a few hundred bookmarks (e.g. see PDF here: http://www.tinyurl.com/6ltcoo). It is almost impossible to find a certain bookmark without first having to expand all bookmarks (which is annoying when there is a deep bookmark structure) and then visually looking for a certain bookmark. Therefore, it would be an amazing feature if there was an input field above the bookmarks that would filter the amount of bookmarks displayed to the ones matching the content of that filter field.
Thanks already for consideration of the above feature suggestions,

Ok, here is three more:
  • Make the extended search highlight all found occurrences in the document, not only the one that is currently seelected in the extended search pane. For example, all found occurences could be highlighted blue, and the one that is selected in the extended search pane could be highlighted in yellow or green.
  • Enable keyboard selection of tools like in Adobe Acrobat. Makes switching from Adobe Acrobat to PDF-XChange Viewer much easier for power users.
  • Make toolbars customizable (add/remove toolbar buttons)
Thanks once more,

To hide all panes at one click, use the toggle button midway down.
This minimizes the panel to the edge of the window. Click on the button again to reopen the panel.

Tracker developers, please change this toggle button to a toggle strip that works on the whole height of the panel as in Opera, and make the toggle strip stay at the very edge of the window for fast closing/reopening of the panels.

The same comments apply to the Extended Search Panel — then the button on the Find toolbar doesn't really need to toggle the Search Panel — though there is no harm in that if it is easy to do.

Agreed about zoom to page width when a document contains mixed page sizes or orientations.

Quick find in bookmarks would be great.

I think tooltips on highlights with notes would be useful.
Indicators could make the document look cluttered if not done carefully.

Customization and undo are on the feature request list and no doubt will be implemented when they're ready.

Hmmm...
I can't seem to find that toggle button...?
Which one do you mean?

Wow, I just found out that the bookmarks pane and the thumbnails pane can be placed freely and independently, it is even possible to have them both open at the same time, above each other!

Thus, it would be even better to also be able to place them side-by-side, especially for widescreen or dual screen setups, kind of like in below mockup:

A second click on a tab could bring back the previously active tab (like e.g. the FLST extension for Firefox)
and, like Opera, allow Right-click/scroll to move through the tabs - I keep doing this and, of course, nothing happens. OK, Opera has made me lazy!
