Opening .dat file

Post by DynMetalworks »

I have pdf-xchange editor and need to open .dat files. Currently, when I try to I get a error for unsupported file type. I was able to do this on my previous computer, but I can't remember what I did in xchange to make it work.

Hello, DynMetalworks

To my knowledge we have never supported reading *.dat file types inherently, but I suppose you could try using the "new document > from text" feature of the file menu for this.

Hello DynMetalworks,

Maybe the file name you are dealing with is "winmail.dat"? If you search the Internet, you will find a vast amount of information, and as has been posted on this topic in the past, the "winmail.dat" file is a file that is automatically attached when the sender's e-mail software is Outlook and the e-mail is created in rich text format. If the "winmail.dat" file is viewed in an environment where the recipient cannot recognize it properly, it will be received with the file attached.

If my guess is correct and you have been able to open the file with PDF-XChange Editor, you might be able to open it by associating the .dat file with PDF-XChange Editor in File Explorer.

I don't know what kind of file it is just because it has a .dat extension, so it is highly unlikely that my guess is correct, but I hope it will be of some help. Sorry if my comment is off the mark.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello rakunavi,

Thanks for your post and suggestion. Indeed if it is an e-mail .dat file there might be solutions, however .dat might be the file name extension for a plethoria of "dat-a" file formats and many software products might be using such files internally, so I hope your guess is right and will help @DynMetalworks !

Kind regards,
Stefan

rakunavi, you are correct. I am trying to open winmail.dat files. I have set explorer to open .dat files with xchange, but I'm still getting the error message in xchange. Does xchange use extensions? I sure wish I could remember what I changed on my previous computer to enable opening them in xchange as I routinely have to open them. Thanks

Hello DynMetalworks,

We have File -> New Document -> From Email:
image.png
Which would allow you to directly open and convert .eml and .msg files to PDFs, however I do not think that we've even been able to natively open winmail.dat files. Maybe you were using outlook in the past to convert those files and then open them in the Editor?

Kind regards,
Stefan
