Windows 11 File Explorer Preview Pane

Post by marchitect »

Windows 11 File Explorer Preview Pane shows very tiny image of selected pdf, and the size does not change when the size of the preview pane is enlarged.
I've tried File Explorer>Options>View>Show preview handlers in preview pane...if I check the box then NO images of any type show at all, if the box is unchecked then images show but any pdf images are very small.
Any suggestions?
(Windows 10 worked perfectly.)

Hi, marchitect

in the preview pane, when you mouse over it, there should be zoom controls:

It should be as simple as changing the zoom level. It is "remembered" across documents. If you use "Fit Page" it should expand with the preview pane.

Does that help?

Hello, marchitect

That is odd. Could I ask for a screenshot of what you do see exactly? there should be some visual giveaways if our preview handler is being used at all.

You may also want to check this article for steps on how to re-register our shell extensions:

Hello, marchitect

Even in a dark mode, this is what our preview handler should look like:
image.png
Note how the background is considerably darker than the rest of the file explorer is?

From this difference alone, it does not appear you are using our preview handler at this point. Have you restarted the device since running the utility? The Article does mention to do this, and it can be quite important, as Windows is notorious for refusing to let go of something else that is "in use".

Following that, do you use any third party utilities or alternatives to the file explorer? any of these could have an impact on this, and may prevent our preview handler from loading. Do ensure you are using an unmodified default Windows File Explorer, to make full use of our products.

Yes I restarted the computer, but no change in the preview pane.
All the handlers still show as PDF X-Change.
I do not use any third party utilities or alternatives to the file explorer.
Thanks,

...I just went Windows Explorer>Options>View>and checked the box for Show preview handlers in in preview pane.
Now the pdf preview is working but my .jpg, .doc, and .dwg previews are not...
Frying pan to the fire...

Hello, marchitect

That is very strange, our handler could not have any impact on any of those items (we don't even support DWG in any capacity with any of our products), Our preview and thumbnail handlers both can only affect PDF files specifically. As such, I am sorry to say that there is definitely something else going on here if more file types are affected.

Is there perhaps a Windows update you have installed recently, or one available that you are missing? It is possible for that to have had an impact on those formats and installing, or reverting it may help.
Otherwise, it could be that you have recently installed/updated another software, possibly CAD or PDF related, which has their own shell extensions that are not cooperating with ours.

Thanks for the help Daniel.
I appreciate it.
I can live without the other previews, but I have to have the pdf preview. So now that one is back.
Thanks,

1) Via Windows File Explorer > View-ribbon > Options > Change folder and search options > View-tab, the check-box at "Always show icons, never thumbnails" should be turned off

2) Did you verify if there is a "Blocked"-key present in Windows registry ?
See: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowledgeba ... extensions
on that page, scroll down to "Shell Extensions and the blocked list", click on it and read the instructions
NOTE: If you like to keep a backup/copy of the "Blocked"-key then first export it, before deleting it.
