Documents sliding by Hand Tool dragging

Post by AxJ »

Version 9.3 build 361.0 does slide, but it doesn't slide now. How to make it slide?

Product: PDF-XChange Editor (Free Version)
Version: 10.5.2 build 395

Hello, rakunavi

That looks to be exactly the issue the video is showing, and I can confirm (I was quite rigorous in testing this) the issue is fixed in 10.6 which should be out in a few hours now.

Once you have update to 10.6 you can restore the previous handling with this option in the preferences menu (Ctrl+K):

I just tested the 10.6 version, and it seems irrelevant to the hand tool dragging slide/scroll behavior. All I need is to slide the PDF page after releasing the left mouse button by using the hand tool to drag.

Hi AxJ,

Could you tell me if you are reviewing documents in continuous mode?

I'm asking this because it works for me, exactly as you describe it should.

Best regards.

It doesn't slide after releasing the left mouse button in any mode.
The viewing page mode is irrelevant because the hand tool can be used to move the page, too, when zooming in.
You can see it in the video I provided. (I don't know why it looks so laggy. It looks smoother on Imgur.)
Can you provide your video?

Hello, AxJ

Gif images, especially those hosted to dedicated gif services, often have a very low framerate to keep file sizes smaller, I similarly keep my framerate on the lower side (I believe it is around 12 fps), but not quite as low as your animation seems to be. That is likely why your Animation was so "stuttery".
In any case, I presume that this is what you are looking for?

This should be the default handling of the hand tool, and I do not believe we offer any settings that can control it.
Please see Rakunavi's post below this one.

If you are finding that you cannot "flick" when the hand tool is active and you are dragging quickly and releasing the mouse during the drag operation, there may be something unique to your end impacting this. I have seen similar cases where those using applications that provide overlays, or input helpers like AutoHotkey have experienced such issues.

In that case, my first suggestion would be to close any and all background applications that may provide any form of visual/interactive overlay or input substitution/monitoring, then restart our Editor and try again to confirm if the issue is still present.

Hello AxJ,

Is the "Inertial Scroll" option, which can be set from the Format tab of the Hand Tool, enabled?

  • figure.png
From build 361 to build 396, this option is enabled by default, so it should not be disabled unless you intentionally change it, but I recommend that you check just in case.

Please forgive me if my comment is off the mark.

Hello, rakunavi

I completely forgot that we ever added this option... Thank you for catching that, I hope this ends up being the solution for our friend here!

Thanks, rakunavi, this is what I'm looking for. Case solved!!
I have to say the UI/UX isn't very good. Why not put all settings into one place?
Still not sure what does the "Format" mean and why the "Inertial Scroll" and "Select Text/Images" are in it.

Hello AxJ,

We can not possibly put everything in one place as there's just not enough room on a screen to do so.
That's why tools are split into categories, and the "Format" tab includes options for you to format the tool/appearance/behaviour of other elements of the UI. That's why the options are there in their own separate menu.

Glad that Rakunavi's help is appreciated and was of assistance!

Kind regards,
Stefan

In fact, you can. You already have a place called "preferences" to put all settings in one place.
Besides, "Inertial Scroll" apparently only has to do with "Hand Tool," and there is a specific setting called "Tools" to put it in.
Also, many tabs have a "Tool" section, they can include it too.
The same reason is valid for "Select Text/Images." They are logically more related to "Tools" than "Format."

Hello, AxJ

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to say that at this time such a change will not be seeing implementation, but the Dev team may reconsider this sometime in the future.
