New document from image "demo"

Post by tkc100 »

Hello
I own a copy of PDF Xchange Editor Version 10.6.0 build 396 and it is installed on a 64 bit PC running Windows 11.
I know that it is dated and not the most current copy of your software but until very recently it did everything, I expected it to do.
It is a very capable piece of software, and I have enjoyed using it.
Suddenly and for no reason that I can ascertain, I started having problems with it. First it was with the OCR and now it is with creating a new document from image. The OCR problem was solved by installing EditorV10.x64.msi.
I have yet to figure out how to get the other function back. When I attempt to create a new document from an image, a message appears stating, that the software will indeed do it but it will be watermarked with “demo”. I don't understand I have used this option many times before.
If you could assist me with this problem, I would be very appreciative.

Change the OCR Engine to something other than Enhanced (FineReader) under Preferences->OCR. The Enhanced engine required the Editor Plus license.

Perhaps I don't understand your directions.
When I go to preferences

I am unable to change from default. Everything is grayed out.

I am beginning to get discouraged now.
Still yet another function that has always been available to me is no longer working.
I can not extract a page without it posting a demo watermark on it.

Hello tkc100,

The Enhanced OCR tool requires a license for the PDF Editor Plus.

It runs in trial mode for 15 days from the first installation date, and then becomes disabled.

I can not extract a page without it posting a demo watermark on it.
That is also one of the paid features. However, this one also works with a license for the PDF Editor.

The license should be present under the Help -> License key menu and should state Activated, for all the features to work properly.

Regards.

I don’t understand. Everything we have been speaking about worked perfectly for years and then just stopped working. It is as if the software had a planned obsolescence built into it. I do not think that it is right that I should have to purchase additional new software to maintain the features and functions that came with the original. Up until now I have been very satisfied with your product, but now I am considering looking for another.

Hello tkc100,

If you mean the Enhanced OCR tool, it is not possible that you had it available with a PDF XChange Editor license.

It has always required a Plus version license, as clearly stated on our website:

https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/pdf-xchange-editor

May I ask what kind of license you currently own? For the PDF Editor or the PDF Editor Plus?

It seems like the most recent version 10.6.0 build 396 of PDF-XChange Editor is being used at this moment (see topic start).

I suppose that the corresponding installation-package has come from the PDF-XChange download page:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/downloads

Probably the current license, owned by tkc100, is not valid anymore for the most recent version.
tkc100 should login with his Registered Client "username" and "password" and download from there:

Kind regards.

I own a copy of PDF Xchange Editor Version 10.6.0 build 396 and it is installed on a 64 bit PC running Windows 11.

Please review:
The first problem that occurred was with the OCR function. I attempted the suggested fix but as you can see from the next post I could not implement it.
Next out of the blue I am no longer able to start a new document from an image.

These are all functions I have used many times.

Does the software come with expiration date necessitating additional purchases?

Hello, tkc100
  • Practically speaking, no, your "license" does not expire, however, maintenacne (which is what grants you access to new releases) can expire. The license itself can always be used in perpetuity within the builds that your maintenance was valid for, so long as they are installed. If you have the older installers, you can even roll back to those versions and continue to use them.
@Willy Van Nuffel
  • You are most likely correct there, and unfortunately, this leads into a new issue. One that is becoming increasingly more common, so I am writing this our in a generic format incase anyone else comes along with the same issue:

To ensure that everyone understands the situation:
    1. The PDF-Xchange Updater will ONLY ever, by defualt, offer you updates which are compatible with an installed maintenance plan.
    2. When your maintenance expires, the updater will not see new updates unless you manually check for them, or if you have changed the default settings, to force updates to be located and downloaded outside your maintenance plan.
    3. In the second case, you will see a prompt from the updater, warning you that this update would invalidate your license.
Now, with all that said, we have absolutely no control over third party applications trying to perform the same process. There are countless apps, including popular security software, which now forcibly install the latest updated for various applications, such as our Editor. If you have one of those apps running, it can entirely bypass our updater, allowing for an update to be installed even when our updater is not present. Most of those applications offer configuration to control which applications are being updated, but that is something you as a user would have needed to configure before the update to our software occured.

To follow along with that issue. We no longer keep older builds on our servers after some time. This means that older builds will become unavailable for download once your maintenance has expired.
@tkc100
If you did not keep a copy of the installer before your maintenance expired, I am sorry to say that the only solution here will be to renew our software from your account page, to gain access to the new release, as well as all of the security improvements and new features that come with it..

If you with to know more about this policy, please see the following message from our CEO:
As of May 9th 2025, a decision was made to remove the older builds of our products from our download pages.

We regret that it is no longer commercially or practically viable to provide unrestricted access to these versions of the software. Clients with current, unexpired, and fully paid maintenance agreements will continue to have access to older builds, as has always been the case. However, once maintenance expires and is not renewed within ninety days, this access will now no longer be available.

Further more - many clients are now using Anti Virus security software that automatically installs the latest versions of software installed on your system, including our PDF-XChange range of software. This is placing an increasing burden on our support teams if users have this functionality in the AV 'switched on' but do not have up to date maintenance in place - meaning it is more important than ever to ensure your maintenance agreement with us is up to date and valid if you wish to allow your AV software to automatically install the latest releases of applications installed on your system.

If you wish to keep some or all of your equipment running older installations of our products and require access to those versions from our website, then you will need to maintain a valid maintenance agreement. The costs for doing so remain modest.

The reason for this policy change is that, despite our ongoing efforts, we continue to find illegal "cracked" and pirated versions of our software - including serial numbers for historic versions — circulating on the internet. The inevitable conclusion is that we may be inadvertently facilitating such illegal activity by continuing to offer access to outdated versions of our products.

Furthermore, the older versions are not on par with the security and functionality of our more recent builds. The newer releases include patches and safeguards against known vulnerabilities that are not present in older builds - so it is absolutely in the best interest of users to remain with the current version at all times.

Please be assured that existing licenses remain valid and fully functional where they are currently installed and in use, in accordance with our licensing terms. However, development and support for older versions ceases after a certain period, and we strongly encourage clients to upgrade to the latest version to ensure compatibility and robust security.

Thank you for your understanding.
My hands are tied here, and there is nothing more that I am able to offer if you are in a situation whereby you installed the incorrect version, either intentionally, mistakenly, or were forced by a third party, and did not keep a method to roll back on hand.
