Print results not good

Post by Mr. Nice Guy »

Hi,

the only way to get good print results is to change options to "print as picture".
Seems to me a little bit strange - is this normal???
Adobe Reader prints are looking good by default - so what could be the reason?

do you mean in terms of quality or speed?

Quality should be fine - if not please zip and post an example - if speed is the issue a new print engine will be released in build 2.040 to combat this.

If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

No, the speed is great. I mean the quality of the prints. They look like a fax, not clear and sharp.

Here are the screens. Please look at the numbers and smileys.
It's just an example - the Adobe prints are much better at all formats:
documents with text only, with pictures and text etc.

I have to change in settings to "Print as picture" (as I wrote),
an then I get the same quality as Adobe Reader Prints.

It would better for us to see if you print as a pdf so that we can compare in adobe etc , the files you have attached don't allow us to reproduce the problem this end.

Can't make a paper-attachment

The problem is clear?
Printing PDFs with default settings becomes a much better quality useing Adobe Reader.

The cause of the problem is unknown, and without the original PDF it is impossible to reproduce the problem. Without reproducing the alleged problem, it is impossible to fix it.

What are your settings in Preferences, Rendering? Smoothing of text, images, and line art might perhaps have some bearing on the print quality.

Mr. Nice Guy:
Please explain what you mean with paper attachment ?
You are saying, that the same PDF file opened by PDF-XChange Viewer and Adobe Reader produces different print results.
Then you must have this PDF file and be able to attach it to post. Without the file it is not possible find the mistake.
I am using Tracker software about two years with no problems. Guys from Tracker also quickly responds to user needs and improve their products. But if you report problem without files causing it, especially when no other user have this problem, it is not possible reproduce this problem and find solution.

It happens for me with every PDF.
I left the settings in Preferences by default.

But maybe someone can tell me what I have to choose in Preferences to get the best quality?!

Do you have installed also PDF-Printer?
If so, can you please open any PDF file causing problems (let say 'source.pdf') in both XChange/Adobe and print it to this printer to files 'targetadobe.pdf' and 'targetxchange.pdf' and post it here? This can be also helpful.

One can see in the preview the result of the prints.
Good quality, if I choose the "picture-option" - it looks like an Adobe print (last screenshot)
None or other options = bad result.

You said nothing before about using FinePrint printer driver. It does some page scaling and other ink-saving tricks on the output from whatever application you're using. Try printing directly from PDF-XChange to a standard printer driver.

By that, Mr Nice Guy, was joking. He cannot attach the paper printout to the forum.

This is normal in the printer preview (see my attached screenshot) but does not have any bearing on the final printed version.

Hm, but when I print it out ... I wrote it.
I've used your portable version and got the same bad results on different Printers/PCs.

Tom. What effect would using FinePrint have? I assume that it is taking the output from PDF-XChange then processing it. As far as I understand, FinePrint will scale the output from an A4 page and print it two up, four up, or whatever, or reduce the dot density to save ink. I don't have it myself, so I cannot test it, but I am sure this would have the effects shown in the screenshots. If Adobe Reader is not printing text as curves, then its output must be processed differently by FinePrint.

Yes, I'm using FinePrint, but it not depends on FinePrint!
I've tested the printing on different PCs and Printers with the portable Version of XChange.

Try adjust DPI when printing - in most cases using of 600 DPI (or higher) will produce much better results then 300 DPI. Also, try to print with and without FinePrint using high DPI - there may be difference.
Anyway print engine will be updated in future releases, this may solve most problems.

Real reason of not so good quality is because for now PDF-XChange viewer prints text as curves.
Into build 40 most text will be printed using fonts, and quality will be higher.
