Enhancement Request - better viewing with columns

Post by lbdyck »

First I really like using your viewer - it is a great productivity boost.

My enhancement request stems from a frustration caused by most creators of PDF files who insist on creating the documents as if they were going to be printed. This includes:
  • 1) Using 8.5x11 page format which when viewed full page is not easy to read unless you have a large monitor turned on its side
    2) Using 2 or 3 columns which wrap meaning that when reading you have to scroll to the bottom of a page and then back to the top to continue to read
    3) Splitting a topic across multiple pages with other topics interspersed
I know that you can't solve the (3) but perhaps you could do something to help with (1) and (2) by dynamically adjusting the page display to a single column view and then adjusting the page size to fit the current viewer window.

Until PDF publishers learn that their audience is reading the PDF online and not printing we will be stuck with viewer unfriendly PDF documents.

Thanks

I'm afraid that you're barking up the wrong tree. The duty of a PDF viewer is to display the document as it was designed. If the document author designed it for print, that is how the viewer must display it.

Your best option is to use the Pan and Zoom navigation window. Resize the Pan and Zoom window and move it to the corner of your PDF-XChanger Viewer window. Resize the highlighted area inside that window until the text is a comfortable size to read.

Now you can drag the highlighted area around in the Pan and Zoom navigator to read your document. This method works very well on multi-column documents.

For single column documents I would recommend using fit to page width, and continuous page layout.
