Spacing for bookmark destination

Post by kennethmgreen »

PDF-XChange Editor used to set the destination of a new bookmark to what was visible on the screen. So, for example, if I selected "Section 1" while Section 1 was in the middle of the page view, that is where the bookmark destination was set. This meant that in order to have bookmark destinations be at the top of the page view, one had to scroll to make that so before adding the new bookmark using selected text.

Then (not sure when) an update caused a behavior change. If I selected text anywhere on the page view, the bookmark destination automatically made the destination at the top of the page. I hope I am describing these scenarios clearly. This new behavior was great for me, because I could go through a chapter in a text book and add bookmarks to sections very quickly (I've mapped Ctrl+B) without having to worry where the text was on the page when I created the bookmark. PDF-XChange automatically put the bookmark (selected text) at the top of the page view.

However, sometimes the document I am working with has spacing issues and the placement of the bookmark is too far to the top - occasionally even cutting off the top of text. This isn't PDF-XChange's fault, but it does create extra work. I scroll so the selected text has adequate space from the top of the page view, create the bookmark, then have to use Set Destination so the bookmark isn't too high. I have mapped shortcuts for both adding a bookmark and adding the Destination, so it's not terrible. It's just an extra step for each and every bookmark with certain documents (usually scanned articles or older books).

All that to say: I'd like to make a feature request that allows some control over the spacing of the automatically placed bookmark destination when adding a new bookmark. Implemented like an option in pixels from the top or something. That way, I could find a balance between lowering the bookmarks on the "bad" PDFs so they aren't cut off, and living with a little extra space from the top with the bookmark destination on the "good" PDFs.

Hello, kennethmgreen

This option is the control you are looking for:

If enabled, the selected text position will be used.
If disabled, the "viewed region" will instead be used.

Kind regards,
